I have a 1980s A512 washer and a slightly newer version of its companion dryer. They have been in constant use since they were purchased, They outlived their first owner and have never given me any problem....EXCEPT that they are located in my more vintage kitchen (and cannot be relocated elsewhere in this house) which has very little space and 19" countertops (today's standard materials are 24"), there are currently only two countertops in the kitchen, each is approximately 2 feet wide. While the washer and dryer are still going strong the kitchen around them has been falling to pieces and it is time to replace it. (yes, I have to admit it I want a dishwasher too) I really like the long term dependability of these machines but it is not possible to design an efficient kitchen around the amount of space they take up...also I would prefer to have more countertop and the top of the dryer does not count for this purpose. Should I be looking around for an SG1000-which would give me another 2' of countertop? Or bite the bullet and purchase the Bosch axxis pair which could fit under 4' of countertops? I need them both to hold up for the long run and would have no interest in buying a replacement set for either in the near future...Should repairs become necessary, I cannot do any repairs myself, DH is very handy but has no personal experience in washer dryer repair. Your thoughts please.

One thing to consider is that if you go with a pair that will provide you with additional counter top area as opposed to built-in under the counter, if repairs are required, the machine(s) would be easier to access. And you can never have too much counter space.

Thank you for responding, I see your issue. If I replaced the dryer that would give me an additional 3' of counterspace and I could make do with that. If I replace both the washer and the dryer that would give me a total of an additional 6' of counter space which would be really nice but not absolutely necessary. The question boils down to: SG1000 or Bosch Axxis -which is likely to do better over the next 10 to 20 year.period....but I am open to suggestions
I have a Maytag stacked set.....dependable as you can get.....there are newer models than my 1985 version.....although I still recommend if you get a used one that it be gone over for cleaning and lubrication....at that point should give you years of trouble free service....
Best Stack Washer-Dryer Option
By far the most reliable best performing stack WD new is a FL SQ ATG50, next best if you want good used and reliable is a Whirlpool 27" wide Thin-Twin, these have much better capacity and performance than a MT stack, they are also almost 100% serviceable in place and do not the the leveling and vibration problems of the MT stacks.
That said the MT gas stacks can be an OK option, you are better off with the newer ones that do not have electronic controls, some of the parts are already NLA and the ones you can get are very costly [ I just looked up a touch panel for one of my customers yesterday and it is almost $300 ]
The words reliable and long lasting and Bosch can not be used in the same sentence when it comes to clothes dryers and Bosch does not have Gas Dryers anyway, there is little likelihood that you would get 20 years out of a Bosch pair.
Best pairs to put under a counter would be a mid-sized WP or MT FL pair, they are a little taller than the normal 36" high counter height so you may need a separate area for the W&D but if you are taller than average this can be a good thing anyway as most counter-tops are too low for many users anymore.
