I'm restoring a Maytag A2MP washer, and the water drain pump is shot. I have no hope of finding an original, but there's probably some later pump that be used as a substitute. Does anybody have any suggestions/experience?

Water Pump for an AMP style AW

Maytag never made a substitute pump for these washers, but if you look long enough you may find a good used one or even a new one that someone happens to have.

Two possible alternatives would be to gravity drain the machine if there is a floor drain in the area where the machine is to be used, Maytag actually made these washers without drain pumps for users that had floor drains. Ironically the WP is one of the weak parts of MT AMP style washers, MT never had a decent WP till they came up with the plastic Poly-Pump on their Helical Drive machines and then they had the best WP in the industry.

The other alternative would be to use an electric drain pump from something like a post 1996 GE TL washer, after you mount it you could wire the two power leads to the brake solenoid so the pump would only run when the washer is spinning.

Good Luck with your project and keep us posted, John.

There are 2 major things wrong with the pump: both the inlet and the outlet spuds are broken off flush with the housing, and there are numerous small holes in the housing itself. (There is also a lot scale build-up inside and out, but that could have been coped with). My notion was to replace it with a (modern) electric pump; the trick is finding one that is approximately the right size and shape so I don't have major issues with mounting it.
