Replacing Timer Dial On Maytag A608

In Thread #5550, on 3/31/06, Jeffrey Arney (Washoholic) posted two photos of the Timer Dial from the Maytag A608. I have a 608 (old friend) but the dial has been rubbed almost clean -- can't read it. Have to wash by guess and by golly.

Tried to buy a new dial from all the internet parts sites, but no go -- not available, too old.

However, If I had a clear, crisp digital photo, centered so that all the data was visible, I could print it on clear, adhesive mylar, stick it on the dial and... voila!

I tried to process Jeffrey's photos from the internet for this purpose, but they are too fuzzy, and a bit off-center, plus a distracting highlight, so I couldn't make them work. And Jeffrey's email address is no longer valid.

Could anyone take another photo, as high rez as possible, well-centered, crisp and clear, and email it to me???

Hi Washington, I took my brother's A608 to the recycler, it was in poor shape but I should have saved the timer dial. There are lots of these machines still around here, if I see one I can strip for parts I will save you the timer dial.

I was just out doing sales calls today and Leemens appliance on state street in bellingham has a tub of old knobs for sale in there show room you will need the old one to make the match. hope this helps

Hey There -

Back in January, Steve (totalnewb) had created a dial for an A606 series 1 machine. While the 608 and the 606 do not share the same pre-soak/soak aligments, the rest of the cycles still funtion/match in the same way. I've included a .jpg of a pdf file that Steve had emailed me. You may be able to modify this for your needs (color, etc). Refer to post 4533 if needed.

Otherwise, just head out to the old scrap yard. You may get lucky!

I was going to order the new face plate for the dial, but decided I didn't want to wait that long to get it. I took what was left of the old dial and the photo fixerman provided and brought them into Adobe Illustrator. I recreated it down the the font and color, then printed them out on self-adhesive sticker paper using a color laser printer. The font is not 100% accurate but VERY close. Few people short of font designers would see the difference.

I then sprayed it with clear sealant to avoid damage from wet hands. If cut properly to account for the curvature of the dial, the seam is almost invisible.

I now have a near-perfect reproduction without waiting, and for almost free. I do graphics, video and multimedia for a living, so this was a piece of cake.

If anyone wants a file to print on their own, let me know. I'd be happy to provide a print-ready file and instructions. It's the least I can do for all the information I have already acquired off this site.

Great ideas, guys, Maytag discontinued the dials in 2001 for the 08 series. It's a shame, so keep the Spray 'n Wash and soapy fingers off the dial and buttons!
