Restoring hotpoint 9530

Hi guys been a lover of this site for years but haven't joined until now well I finally took the plunge and got a lovely hotpoint 9530 in almond when it came to me the pump wasn't working it had rusted and the previous owner had just run it until it seized up so anyway I replaced the pump but as this is my first restoration project could anyone give me an idiots check list of what to change next as I want to make this machine my daily one the bearings are in great condition too

Cheers chris glad there's more Yorkshire folk here lol it's in really good condition just need some work top trims but I'll get there with it I haven't plumbed it in yet but everything seems to work fine on it once I work out how to put pictures on I'll upload some glad I'm not the only one with a strange fascination for washing machines

Welcome Chris,

Well if the bearings are smooth then it's well worth doing up. Those 95 series machines are quite simply the best. Don't know if you have tested it out yet so i can't really give you any advice. Here is a picture of yet another machine that i have picked up today. It's a Hotpoint WM22 in brown & almond, i have not got around to testing it out yet but my bet is that it just needs a set of new motor brushes.

there's plenty of us out there, you just have to track us down. Same with the vacuum collectors . Where abouts in West Yorks are you?

Personally, I've never owned a Hotpoint, but I remember lots from the time - my Grandma had a 18361, my sister had a 9534 at uni and I've used a few since belonging to various collectors and I've always been impressed. Not sure if they're "the best", though. Quality control seemed to be severely lacking at Hotpoint and I know of a few people who had nothing but trouble with 95's and early WM's. Having said that, the people I knew that had good ones seemed to last forever.

hottiecrazy, well done on getting an almond 9530, ive got the machine which replaced the 9530 in its day, a 9534, in almond, mine needs alot of work but mechanically its sound, thats all you really need to think about, the outside condition dosent matter as long as its not rotted so much that it could fall apart, as long as it works without any problems you'll find it a great machine to run everyday

We owned an Electra branded Hotpoint for 2 years, but it was horrid. Forever breaking down. I've always been more of a fan of Zanussi and Hoover than Hotpoint.

Hi Chris,

The 9530 is a model I hope to earn someday. Something about that model really shines to me... It's not uncommon for people to throw machines out because of a pump failure. I'd say your next bet is to clean the simple filter in the sump hose and fill it up in case anything leaks. By the sound of it youre ready to go!

It's working!!!

Plumbed it in this morning and wow I forgot how good these machines where I did a boil wash first to clean it out and to test for leaks but all was fine then I put my work stuff in on number 5 and couldn't believe it was all over and done with within an hour and clean and fresh smelling

And for the Yorkshire folk I live in dewsbury ps we are not all rough and some of us work for a living lol

Does anyone know is the interlock supposed to buzz or is something wrong with it?

Anyway, for a good restoration a new door seal/gasket is a good choice if it is mouldy or leaking. Also, give the detergent draw a good scrubbing down, very easy to clean draw's.

We had a 95620 New Generation when I was a boy which had lasted very well and only died when the bearings got shot, the spider cracked and the whole drum had almost fallen!

Restoration is a good way of making money. I have got several machines in the past and made a bit off them

Glad you got the Hotpoint working. They're amazing machines, I grew up with a 9534, miss the sound of the interlcok buzzing haha.

Dewsbury, not far... I'm from Batley Dewsbury ain't bad, its just the media and some people giving it a bad name.

Some of the old Hotpoints were useless! My nana's 95 series washer dryer had to have 3 new bearing and spider sets and it needed lots of new dispenser drawers (they always cracked). Good luck with your Hotpoint Chris!

That's quality control at Hotpoint for you. If you got a good one, it lasted forever. If you got a dodgey one, you had no hope of a reliable laundry service

The dryer was rubbish in it as well! It took 3 hours to dry a load and it had a lot of static. She replaced it with an Indepoint last year which is actually slightly better quality.
