Reverse Idler Question.

My dad had recently brought home an old VCR. The issue with the VCR is the reverse idler rubber is hard, and this causes the VCR to eat the tape.

Is there a way to unharden the rubber on the reverse idler?

You could try rubbing alcohol. That is what we always used to clean/renew rubber record changer idler wheels. Alcohol is what I have always used to clean reel to reel tape deck capstans also. Usually if the tape is wrapping around the wheel, it means the wheel is dirty or sticky. Try it, and good luck with the VCR.

Rubber rejuvenating often is temporary...a new part would be best. Search on "rubber rejuvenator" as there are products designed specifically for this like from PRB that are worth a try.

Or you could send in your old idler wheel to be "rerubbered". There are places that strip off the old rubber and replace it with a new improved material that won't harden up with age.

I see they even have belts for my Betamax.

Sometimes you can take the tire off the wheel and turn it inside out to get more use out of it.
