Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yes, this all gets a "Wow!" from me also. Beautiful house, beautiful appliances, beautiful cars too. Heck, despite my obsession with energy efficiency, antique "road sculpture" gets an exception!:-).

BTW, your GE Filter-Flo looks a lot like one my family had when I was a kid.

Wow how fun!

Rick can I come over and play??

You have done quite a job I know my Vic is 1892! They aren't easy are they. I have a question you lights are original yet were they electrified from the start or were they gas converted to electrification? They seem to be placed where gas lighting went yet the early electrics would have been placed that way too.
And is that a 1961 Starfire????? We had a 1963 Starfire what a car! I wish we still had it , it caught fire on my mother and went up in minutes in 1968!
You have sparked a desire to restore a 1956 Whirlpool I really like that waterfall filter sooo consistent not like the Filter-FLo!!!

R & B:

Looks like it might be time to put all pics in an album and post a link to it. I know partscounterman and other dialup users would thank you.

Love those Kenmores and that Whirlpool! YeeHaa

OOPS - I'm a Spazz

Sorry Bethann - missed the VERY FIRST POST which states plainly that y'all are working on an album but you wanted to give us some tasty tidbits to look forward to.

Hope I get this retraction posted before the entire member base flames me.

Sorry!

Lighting Questions

Hi Jetcone,
Yes you can come over and play!! (:
All the lights in my home are hung on the original gas lines. The electric wires for the lights are knob and tube and original, with the push buttons switches. The house had NO electrical outlets at all!! (1887 home) So all the outlets and wiring for them have been added. A new electrical service was added at that time to replace the original 30 amp service.
The lights in the upstairs are from the 1920's. The dining room lights are original. The chandlier above the dining room table was gas and electric. The other lights in the dining room were only electric. The power company here in Fort Wayne was called Jenny Electric (later it became General Electric) Jenny Electric shut down at about 8:00 Pm,so then people had to switch over to gas lights.
I have some more pictures that will be put into an album soon.
A couple rules of thumb for owning an old home:
If you think it will cost $100.00 it will be $1,000.00
If you think it will take an hour,it will take a month
If you think nothing else can go wrong, somthing major will "go out" the same day
Just when you think you have seen it all,you will find a bat in your newly remodeled kitchen,or something like that
Care to add anything Jetcone??? LOL
Thanks,
Rick

cars

The 1961 Oldsmobile is a Super 88 Coupe,or "bubbletop" as that body style was called. It has a 394 cid 330 hp, factory air conditioning, bucket seats, and factory cruise control. It also has a speedo that changes colors. It has a green line until 35,then changes to orange. At 65 mph it turns bright red. It is VERY fast, but not so good on the MPG area!! LOL
The old Cadillac is a 1955 Coupe de'Ville. It has a 331 cid hp??? Guidematic headlamps, signal seeking radio, power windows, brakes, steering, and power seat, and antenna. (no a/c on that car) It is better on the mpg,but not as fast as the Olds. They are both a blast to drive!
Thanks,
Rick

Rickr's cars

A little more info for everyone.

Standard Cadillac engine had 250 HP in 1955, Eldorado models had 270 HP (2 four barrel carbs)

The automatic headlight dimmer wasn't called "GuideMatic" until 1960. Before that it was called the "Autronic Eye" on all GM cars.

The "bubbletop" roof was shared with all the GM 2 door hardtops EXCEPT Cadillac

My great uncle's had that lightbar/timeline type speedometer that changed colors too and I loved it! Is Olds the only one that offered that? My dad had a 1960 Buick but that didn't have it.

One other car I saw once, I think it was a Chrysler, had a steering column that moved from side to side. I don't know if it was to faciltate getting out of the car easier or what. And I loved pushbutton automatic transmissions!

I know Ford made a "Glide Away" steering column that went side to side, I saw it in a mid 60's Thunderbird. It wouldn't surprise me if Chrysler had one too.

Pushbutton Tranny's are really cool too. Edsel even put the buttons in the center of the steering wheel.

Looks like we've got some guys who know their cars! : ) Right before winter came a knocking I had the good fortune of picking up 3 '59 CDV's and a '60 to keep me busy. The Cadillac Grand National is in DesMoines this year so I've got to get moving when Spring arrives or I'll end up taking the Eldo.

Cars are one of the few things that can make collecting washing machines seem down-right space efficient!!

You can check the link for some pics-

Imperial

Imperial and Chrysler never had a moveable steering column like that. The "Swing Away" steering wheel was a Ford exclusive and available as an option on T-Birds and Full-size Fords. Chrysler products DID have the swing-out swivel seats.

Several makes used the line-type, changing color speedometer. Chrysler used it a lot, but Olds and Buick also used the concept at one time or another.

1887 lighting

1887 lighting should have been gas, or maybe combo gas/electric fixtures, not just electric. What are the facts Rick?

I love those big cars! I have a unusual radio from I think a 59 Olds that was portable but I dont have a pic on this computer. Rick I also had a dual 4bbl intake for the 394 but I thought I would never use it so its gone. Nice caddys cory! Jacksunst, My first car was a 68 t-bird and I think it was called a swing-away steering colum. That car had multi speed winshield wipers that drove me crazy! Here`s a link to a 59 Ford Galaxie 500. I loved this car so much I would shake every time I got in it for the first month I had it.
