My 1983 GE Carry cool air conditioner died last night while running; it was faithful up to the very last.
What brand should I buy now for reliability and over all quality? I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks, Gary

My codolences on your loss

With what has happened to AC units, I don't think reliability is something to look for anymore. You just buy one of the Chinese-made units and use it 'til it craps out. I got a Sharp from Costco this year to replace a Friedrich that died. The Friedrich was an expensive, made in the USA POS. The Sharp is a relatively inexpensive Chinese POS. Some are quieter than others. None have adequate filters anymore. You should go to HD and buy one of the thick filters in the bag with the green label that says something about electrostatic filter. You will have to remove the front panel or tip it open like on the Sharp and put a piece of this filter, cut to fit, in to prevent horrible dirt from building up in the coils and fan.

locked fan motor

that is a pretty common carrycool problem-especially the older GE motor ones, you
might be able to oil the motor up good and get it turning again-this has worked
for a few of my carry cools.

My family had an older ge carry cool and the same thing happend to ours, you might try to get it running again, who knows could be an easy fix.

Carry-Cool

Over the years our family had numerous GE Carry-Cool and HP Porta-Cools and we only ran into 2 issues with them, 1 being the fan motors seizing and the other would be freeze-up of the coils. The one I have, and still have requires a good oiling every seasin and it's good to go.

For some reason I like these units.

I had 2 of them and one would never self start the fan. Maybe try removing the filter cover and turn the fan on, then stick a screwdriver etc. In and give the fan a push. Hopefully it will work. Mine always cooled well.

the fan

I have 2 GE carry cools, (one is labeled hotpoint but they are identical). The one in the bedroom has this issue every summer. The first time I turn it on each year, the motor will hum, but the fan will not turn. A few drops of sewing machine oil on the fan shaft, and a gentle nudge to the blades with a screwdriver to start it the first time, and it will run problem free all summer, even though I turn it off during the day, and back on at night, after that first time it starts on its own the rest of the summer. I have used it this way for 4 years, after purchasing it from an elderly man who ran across it while cleaning of his barn, where it had been for years.

That's exactly what I had to do to mine (got it for free from an elderly lady who said it didn't work) and it works fine. Is there any humming or buzzing when you set it on fan only? If it hums, it just needs some oil and a nudge.

If you are going

to buy a new a/c, why not try out a portable unit, I bought one last October, I am from South Africa so our summer starts in October and only ends around APril, so for the greatest part of the year it is summer(38 degree Celsius) not my favourite season. I bought a Portable unit as we are renting a house, to be more specific a Olimpia-Splindid Piu, it is an Italian company, it really delivers, reatively quiet and very good at cooling down the room. Most houses here have mid wall split units and it is rarely that you see an wall/window unit, mostly in old houses, but most airconditioner installers dont even do that anymore its just not as efective as a split unit. SO if it is your house why not go for a more effective and engergy efficient Daikin models with inverter motors, they are suppose to be the best.
