RIP: 1983 Whirlpool Refrigerator

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

After! Lowe's delivered the shiny new GE in Millenium Harvest, aka Stainless Steel, this past Friday. I had picked out this exact model a while back, mainly because of the styling and the TurboCool feature. Recently however, we were going to get an LG side-by-side in Platinum (not stainless), until I read CR and found out that they basically cheated on their Energy Star tests. I'm going to miss the old Whirlpool (sniff) as it is the only refrigerator we have had since I was born, but, instead of going to the Krusher, one of the delivery guys took it for their own personal use...YAY!

Close-up of the controls (there's an LCD temperature readout as well; I need to figure out how to get it to display full-time):

Wow, awesome fridge!

I wish I had one like that....

Don't forget to replace the water filter though!

Anyhow, congrats on your new fridge!

WhooHooo! My Arctica has the same filter arrangement. There was a brief discussion on THS recently about how long the filters last. Somebody cut an old filter open to see what it collected, and there isn't much material inside. More of what looks like a charcoal or carbon webbing than anything else.

Word of caution: My 'fridge has a problem with leaking from the dispenser trim. An ooozing dribble that slowly creeps down the door leaving a nasty streak in its wake. Far as I can tell, it's condensation. It was much worse for a while when my A/C blower wasn't working right and was re-wired for about a month to run continuously. The humidity level in the house increased noticeably. I took off the trim a couple months ago and somehow there is moisture collecting inside the door around the dispenser module, to the point that it seeps out from the slots where the trim attaches. I've left the trim off and soak it up by folding a paper towel and tucking a corner into the mounting slots. Sometimes there's enough from one slot to completely saturate a paper towel, or two.

I'm gonna hafta post a picture of my Whirlpool fridge like yours. It's of the same vintage. That was a good era for W.P. fridges. I desired the stainless-steel look of a new fridge, but don't have quite the money for it. So, armed with my automotive spray gun, and a can of silver paint left over from painting my van, the fridge got a coat of silver paint to cover up the tattered white finish. Looks really good with the wood-tone handle too! Mine has a smooth finish though, so, with a little sanding, I got a mirror-smooth finish that would make any automobile custom shop proud!!!

Congrats on the new fridge, that looks like quite a fun piece. I'm interested to hear how the turbo-cool works! I always like the digital readout of the interior temp on the front door. That's definitely a nice feature, along with the high-temp alarm!
