This One Really Hits Home

My first memories of ATWT go back to my nursery school/day care days in the late 50's. ATWT was on the TV daily at Mrs. Lonero's house. Never watched it seriously myself or knew anyone who did, but I can still visualize the B&W image of the globe turning on her newer-than-ours TV set.

Oh My Goodness,

I find this hard to believe after they have just cancelled Guiding Light. But we are living in a world where there are not a lot of women staying at home washing, ironing, and watching soaps as our mothers did. Does anyone remember Mrs. Hughes (Nancy) having a Sears dishwasher with the round top rack. I was a kid, but I always envy Mrs. Hughes' dishwasher and spotless kitchen. This is a sad day in daytime TV

I haven't watched soaps in years, but it still seems unsettling to know they're going the way of the dinosaur. When I was a kid in the 1960's, they ran from about 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 in the afternoon. My mom (who didn't work outside the home) kept track of at least 7 or 8 soaps. Some of them ran only 15 minutes back in the early '60s (Secret Storm and Search For Tomorrow, I believe).

I guess we watch our soap operas at night, now (Desperate Housewives; Brothers & Sisters, etc.)

Remember

Many daytime soaps got their start on radio, then moved on to television as it gradually replaced the former as the new in home entertainment medium.

The primary reason for these programs was to promote and sell household goods, products and appliances which is where the term "soap operas" comes from. Nearly all the soap opera greats were originally sponsored by household soap/detergent/cleaning product makers such as Lever Bros and P&G.

Yes, times have changed, and while many women have gone into the workforce, those staying at home are just as likely to be on the Web or listening to their IPod or some other modern thing than sitting down watching the boob tube for hours. Many women had these programs (both radio and television)on in the background as they did housework/cooking for "noise".

Again, when the queen of daytime television (Oprah)gives up the ghost, you know something is going on.

Goodbye!!!!

I remember,I watched the Secret Storm and Edge of Night when I got home from school with my grandmother and they were 30min each and that was in 1959 and 60. What I really remember all of the car sounds were the same on soaps in the background and they were standard shift.Seems like someone was always in the kitchen cooking. Great memories Bobby

I am just sick to hear this news. I have been a loyal watcher for 45 plus years. It just doesn't seem possible that they are calling it quits. It will be interesting to hear what brought this about!!

"As The World Turns" was my mother's favorite. She also watched "Secret Storm" "Edge of Night" and later "Another World" and "Days Of Our Lives". I still remember the characters' names and some of the storylines.

Poor Nancy, what a saint...what she went through with Ellen, and the later Bob and that hussy Lisa (who didn't end up all that bad)...and then there were Steve Aldridge and his nurse-fiance...her kid got RockyMountain Spotted Tick fever...the maid figured it out...and then there was the Horton Family, and Mickey Horton and his love Maggie...and Rachel and Steven Frame, and Rachel's long-suffering mom Ada...and then that Mac Corey...lordy, I'm datin' m'self bad...

Will we ever know the conclusion of Vickie/Nickie? I haven't watched for 20 years, but I always thought she was the coolest. Well, at least I still have Bo and Hope (for now)!!
