RIP Soupy Sales

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I always loved his show as a kid. Nobody ever reprimanded me for watching it. That would have been via our old '51 Capehart model 325F.

I guess we show our age when Jell-O reminds us of Sales instead of Cosby.

I also guess that at my age, I should be used to feeling older after hearing news like this, but I'm not.

Never heard of the guy, but I just threw his name up on youtube and cruised through a couple clips. He appears to be one heck of a comedian and has a great sense of humor!

Soupy was great. His TV show was on of the inspirations for the Pee Wee Herman show.

I remember when he got his radio show, middays, on WNBC New York, the first thing I heard him do was a "henweigh" joke.

Even Sinatra got a pie in the face on Soupy's show:

Ken D.

Soupy started his kids show in Detroit

...in the 50's. "Lunch with Soupy" was mondo popular with my peer group when we were 8 or 9. One time our Cub Scout pack was going to be on a different kids show (Fun House? can't quite recall the name). It too was locally produced, live from the same station as Soupy. (WXYZ TV) We assembled in the studio prior to the start, and had to be silent because *Soupy Himself* was doing his show in the adjacent studio. There were only curtains separating the spaces, so we quickly found the openings between the panels, and there he was! That part of the outing was better than being on the show we had come to participate in.

I still have my fan club card. It was called the "Bird Bath Club" and there were every so often perks associated with it. My dad and I went downtown one time to a show at one of the huge theaters. Soupy did some schtick, and they had a band and some kid performers, and showed a movie as well.

I have nothing but great memories of Soupy Sales. We all were crushed when he left Detroit for New York, but it didn't diminish his fan appeal.
