Found this a week ago along side the road....brought it home.....it's a LG TROMM Electric dryer....Model DLE5977S....outside of a major lint and hair cleanout, lubed the rollers(which were not turning), and put a cord on it.....I can't find a single thing wrong with it!

my main question here, after having it open and seeing the insides, What makes this machine so freakin QUIET?....if it weren't for the lights and seeing the clothes tumbling, you barely know its ON!...the only damper pads I see were 2 strips around the drum, other than that, a hollow shell like any other dryer, not even blower noise.....

You'd never see something like that thrown out here.

Oh I don't know. *LOL*

Problem is those roving bands of scrappers would have gotten to it within an hour of being put curbside. One sees them in Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, etc.. with license plates ranging from NYS to PA, to NJ.

Here in Manhattan many apartment building workers have their own they look after and will contact them when things are going to be thrown out to give a heads-up. Also many of the same are either offered outright or simply claim anything decent that is thrown out.

Finally it is not unheard of for the construction contractor and or his workers to claim appliances (amoung other things) when doing a renovation job.

Did they cut the cord on the dryer? For some strange reason

Over here is stated on each manual that the curbed appliance should be rendered inoperable, so cutting the cord is the most common and easiest method do do so.

cord was just not there.....what I found odd, normally if your throwing out a dryer, you would take out the screws and remove the cord, in this case, they put the screws back in, which I had to remove to install the new cord....if the dryer is going to scrap, would it matter if you re-installed the screws and cover plate?...

I think I have more Garfield stuff than anything else!......

forgot to mention.....the load of towels they were drying was also left inside....nice white ones at that, not sure if I want to use them on the car or not....very bizarre!

More Than Likely...

The washing machine suffered an early death and the owner was so pissed, bought a new set of a different brand.

That would be my guess.

I had one of thos LG dryers and it became the squeakiest rattling thing I have ever heard!

When I came to visit back in July, I bough 3 sets of LGs. This is similar except mine has the steam drawer.Got them all from Homo Depot. For my favorite aunts and uncles  and one of my cousins. All have the steam feature and two are stackd. The other is sxs with the storage drawers. Great performance and real quiet.

Almost Every Owner's Manual One Has Seen For A Major App

And even small ones advises to either cut the cord or at least plug before discarding. Don't understand the rationale behind the suggestion but on many things found crubside the cords are chopped off. Happily the vintage Hoover floor polisher that was going to be discarded near Park Avenue did not suffer that fate. It now hangs in our broom closet. There was a plastic bag tied to the handle containing all the brushes and pads as well.

Maybe the cheezy silver paint job dampens cabinet vibrations and makes it quieter.

Were you lucky enough to score the matching washer off the curb, too?

@launderess:

Agreed, it's good practice to dispose of any electrical device sans cord.

We live in a litigious enough world that if we were to leave a defective appliance at the curb that it might come back to bite us.

Interesting and unusual curb find-was it out for trash day?Machine looks to nice and new to be thrown out-and doesn't look damaged-so it didn't fall off a truck. In the "Classic Refuse Truck" videos the trashmen cut cords off the machines before they put them in the trucks "Krusher"Besides the broom and dustpan, shovel, there is now a pair of wirecutters on the side of the truck for lopping off cords. Its said they save the cords for copper.--but then why put the appliance in the krusher? That would have more metal and copper than the cord???Some trash pickups don't allow the compaction trucks to take appliances.

Cutting the cord

We have to cut the cord off over here in case the scrap man plugs it in and gets a shock. Scrap dealers are often called toters over her now sure why, They rome the streets in pickup trucks looking for anything of value

Although it was not near a "Salon" of sorts, maybe a home business, it was loaded underneath with long red hair, wrapped around everything, I was scared to put my hand in there to remove the belt, and almost like someone Hairsprayed the lint and hair in place.....beyond GROSS!.....

I first hooked it up, put it thru a test run, everythig seemed fine, and could not believe someone thru something out like this that worked, there was a strange smell as if something burnt, which I figured was lint and such on the electric coils, after about the third load, then it happenned, this unheard of screaching and squeeling, so I ventured inside, and found this mess, and hair wrapped around everything, like a massive cobweb, packed around the rollers, which were seized, a massive cleanout, and lube, back together, and so far, One Happy Camper of a machine.....

no sight of the washer, but after seeing and hearing this machine, I am curious to have one......just not so sure from this same house, if this is what the dryer looked like, imagine the rest of the house!

these machines appear to be all "GLAM", inside was no suprise, I would have liked to see more heavier guage of metal, especially for the price they charge for these, but not eveyone takes note of this stuff, like we would...

beggars can't be choosy, but I would have liked it to have been a GAS model...

quietness

That is interesting that it is so quiet. I have a Frigidaire Affinity, product of Electrolux, and while it isn't as bad as it could be, it makes the typical droning type of blower sound. That kind of gets to me after a while, but it does an otherwise pretty good job.

I had that kind of sound when I owned a Frigidaire TallTumbler stacked set.....there was something about the blower on those dryers that made a sound that would be annoying while it ran....

this droning about best describes it.....

but on the LG I found, I had to open it to clean it out, but also wanted to have a looksee as to what made it so quiet, and didn't find anything out of the ordinary of any other dryer....just some dampening pads wrapped around the drum.....but otherwise, no insulation what so ever.....just interesting to be so quiet

I one time had a Samsung set that went bad and it was under warrenty and I called the company and they refunded my money on the set but they made me cut the cord onthem and mail it back to them with the model and sereal number sticker to receive my refund and it was my responsibility to dispose of them (place them out on the curb or have them picked up by the company that sold me a new one) they pedestals on them so I sold the pedistals and gave them the broken washer and Dryer and they fixed them.

Our Samsungtag Neptune dryer is a very quiet dryer once it's all warmed up. (used to be quiet on startup too when it was new but that was nearly 7 years ago and I've yet to perform any work to it yet) Only sound is the drum turning and the burner starting, it's right in a closet in the kitchen and never really notice it running even if your standing right next to it.

Perhaps it's a Korean thing?

LG's a better design

LGs drums are Rolled and welded better then most other companys also the motors feild coils very close and the placeing of the rollers is far enough where the drum wont vibrate.

lg dryer

I would've snagged it immediately! Their dryers sure do have powerful blowers. I noticed this with my mom's lg when I walked in the backyard. When I walked by the deck, you could kind of feel the air and definitely hear it. Yet the dryer was so quiet when I stood right in front of it.
