I don't recall if there has been a discussion here about Roombas. I received one for Christmas, and have found it to be useful. It doesn't work so well on carpet, being much more a sweeper than a vacuum. However it does quite well for me on tile, which covers all of my house except the three bedrooms. Corners are missed to a degree -- can't fit a round Roomba into a corner -- and it sometimes seems befuddled, LOL, and does a lot of repetition, but I like it and it's fun to watch.

Can't use it in the MBR, it consistently gets stuck under the bed, and the carpet has a few buckles which it doesn't handle well. I have the base outside my utility room, with a schedule set for 9 PM on Wednesdays while I'm usually at work. It typically backs off the base, goes under the barstools, turns the corner into the living room, moseys around there, into the office, a little into the kitchen and dining room. Eventually ends up going down the hall, through both spare bedrooms, utility room, a little into the dining room and kitchen. I may close a few doors sometimes to keep it out of the utility or bathrooms since it tends to get distracted and spend more time there than needed and later close it up in those rooms to give them a going-over. Or use the virtual walls to concentrate it in a specific area.

A month or so ago I had a bad headache on a Wed evening, went to bed in a spare room for a while instead of heading off to work. Mr. Roomba fired-up, I heard it roaming around, then it came down the hall into the bedroom for a few mins and into the bathroom. It left the bedroom, I dozed off, then a while later it was back in the bedroom again, hahaha.

My dislikes are that the battery doesn't seems to last long, the little vacuum filter gets clogged quickly, it (the Roomba) gets scuffed and occasionally stuck when running under the cabinetry toe kick in the kitchen and bathrooms, and all the bumping-into-things is kinda goofy. Long-term reliability in regards to the bumping, and strain when getting stuck on or under something, is yet to be determined.

It's not something I would have considered buying myself, but I would now recommend them to anyone who perhaps isn't a whole lot enamored of vacuuming and has a large enough expanse of tile or other hard-surface flooring to make it useful.

My mom's fiance got us a Roomba a while back because our house is almost completely tile and hardword flooring except the bedrooms upstairs. Ever since, mom's Kirby Ultimate G has been sitting in the dining room collecting dust! Oh well, I guess that means it is simply being preserved so I can use it a whole bunch when I grow up and move out! lol

DADoEs, sounds like you have one of the earlier versions. I picked up a 530 for my brother and his wife for Christmas, and it does a great job. They have a large open kitchen and dining area, laminate floor with many rugs around. There is a very large area rug under the table, a rug by the front door, rug by the garage door, rug by the stairs and rug by the sink. It zipped around, did not matter if the rug was thick or not. If it found a dirty area it focused on it. My sister-in-law commented that it looked like it was mating with the rug by the front door, it just kept going over and over it till it was clean.

I told a cousin about it and she was interested, 3 kids, one 6 moths old. She wanted to simplify her life and opted for the same model, and she loves it. Turns it loose all over the house. Kid are fascinated by it and are more than willing to pick up toys to watch it vacuum. The logic and sensors are very much improved, and the little arm that come out the side cleans right up to the wall. The light houses are very helpful in cleaning several rooms.

I've had the Scooba for over a year and it does a pretty good job washing floors. I notice the difference in the logic routines between the latest Roomba and the older Scooba, new routines seem more efficient. I had a problem with my battery in the Scooba and iRobot was quick to replace it and send me a plug in reprogrammer to change the Scoobas recharge cycle. Great product and great company. I'm really tempted to get one of their gutter cleaners...

My sister gave us a Roomba two years ago. It does well on the hard surfaced flooring, and it does pick up dog hair quite well. But it can't do deep cleaning.

My nutty sister bought one and when she got it, she gave away her Kirby G4. All she uses is the Roomba, and she has some pretty thick carpeting. One can only imagine the dirt build up she has.

I think the Roomba is good for a midweek pick up. But not as a replacement for regular vacuuming. Our Miele isn't very heavy and does a fantastic job! Our Roomba hasn't been used in about 6 months.

Got one as a gift

I live in a house built in 1797. I got this neat and nifty looking thing as a Christmas gift.

I set it loose.

My Boxers went wild. Barking and chasing ensued for the great invader.

I reigned in the Boxers.

The machine went on with its mission. Did pretty good but not quiet there for me since I have an unusual house since it is so old. It seemed to avoid certain areas of the house.

I think this might work quiet well for modern built dwellings. The concept is great and I hope the makers will continue to improve on it.

And make a Boxer friendly model.

Boxer Friendly Model

And here's my Roomba Schedular model, with optional Boxer accessory. Mainly I use my Simplicity S-18 for vacuuming and then the Hover Floormate to wash the floor. The Roomba doesn't do a bad job and is great for cleaning under the beds and such. The house is all tile with no carpeting, so it's just really picking up dust from the tile.

One of my Lab dogs will pick the Roomba up and carry it out of the kitchen and leave it upside down in the front hall. He definitely thinks it's the enemy! Lots of woofing and crying at it too.
But then again when Karen is vacuuming with the Miele, he'll try to grab the end of the hose too. But he doesn't try that with me as he knows I'll follow him and vacuum him with it!

I've had a Roomba for almost 4 years. I have wood floors and lots of pets, so it is great to keep the hair under control. I have a shag rug in the living room that it gets tangled in, so I have to watch that, otherwise it does great - maybe not so well in the corners. I don't run it as often as I should, I need to upgrade to the scheduler. The only problem I've had is the battery dies about every 1 1/2 years. iRobot is great about replacing them, but now my warranty is out so I'll have to buy one next time.

I haven't spent the money yet, but I'm interested in the Scooba - if there is anything I hate more than sweeping and vacuuming, its mopping.
