For some reasone I am interested in the roomba vac. Any thought on this (pro-con) would be appreciated. I have all hard wood floors. Do they really work ? Mike

It works for me!!

My nephew was here over the 4th. He loves gagets too and was going on about the Roomba he and his wife just bought...so next thing I know, the partner here orders from Amazon the Roomba 4230 Remote Scheduler, there is currently a $25.00 discount.

Well, the darn thing actually works!! The whole house is tile, with a roving Doberman that sheds hair like crazy, plus all our Las Vegas dust. First time through the dust pan did fill up rather quickly, but after that we just empty it right after it gets done cleaning. I am surprised at the amount of very fine dust it picks up. With the Doberman, he's got short hair, so no tangles of hair around the brushes.

The scheduler come with two of the virtual walls and the remote. The remote allows you to manually drive the Roomba and set prescheduled cleaning times. So far it has fallen off into the sunken living room a couple of times, but it is learning where the step are.

Have I retired the poor old G4 Kirby just yet? No, still needed for dusting and some areas the Roomba can't get to.

I wonder how well it would work on carpets? probably one with a brush roll might do the job

The Problem..

I have not actually used a Roomba, but have a friend who bought one on a whim.

From my observation, the Roomba only has a revolving brushroll--much like manual carpet sweepers have (the Roomba's is run by an electric motor). They do not have a suction motor, so on anything other than a tile/hardwood/vinyl floor, or low pile (indoor-outdoor) carpeting, they won't be very effective at removing the dust or grit that settles to the bottom of a carpet. Only the surface dirt.

50/50 Hmm

This sounds too go to be true. I would want it for the main floor which is all wood with a few low pile runners. I do not even know of anyone who has one to go check it out. Still want one. Mike

Hey to all:

I didn't mean for it to post so many times as it wasn't going thru on my end but boy now I feel stupid

One of my son's has the Roomba. They have all hardwood and tile and it does a great job. With 3 kids ages 2 to 6 and two dogs sure keeps things nice looking. He or my daughter-in-law usually run a dust mop on weekends to get the corners ect. after using the roomba. As they have over 2100 sq feet they are thinking about getting a second. They got this last year after he my other sons and son-in-law resurfaced the hardwood floors last year.

Mike

Hey Mike;

My house is small and is mostly wall to wall carpeting except in my kitchen and bathroom and they are small so it wouldn't pay me to get one, that's the only reason I'm not if I had a big area that wasn't carpeted I would definately get one

It DOES suck

That's not true about the lack of suction. It actually has 2 types of brush rollers plus suction. We recently got a Roomba (scheduler model) and it actually works pretty well! We have all hardwood floors downstairs, a cat & a parrot who creats a lot of dust & feather bits. It picks up all of this & more, then finds it's charging base & parks itself when it's done! Kind of fun, actually. I have heard it does well on low pile carpet. It doesn't have any problem with my area rugs (no fringe). If you're thinking of getting one I highly suggest you check out the roomba review forum. BTW we got ours free using AMEX points. So if you have an American Express card & some spare points think about it. Also Costco.com has them & they have the most liberal return policy I know of. Let me know if you have any more questions.

there is some suction, but not nearly enough to get any kind of buried or settled dirt from a carpet. the surface will look swept. but you sill have filthy, trashed carpeting if the rhoomba is all you use. for bare floors, im sure its quite good.

At where I work--its all bare floors--would love to see a pack of Roombas here-would be fun to watch them-wonder if the RF from the SW transmitters would affect them?In some cases would think the Roombas would do a better job then the janitors here.some areas of the floor there are dust bunnies big enough to wear an ID badge!

ok ok I want the roomba

Not sure which one but, I want one. Next to the pool cleaner & the dishwasher this is the best invention. Mike

They make one that does vacuum.

I don't know what its called but they make one that does have a vacuum in it. Also now they make a new one call the Scooba which will wash your tile floors. Pretty cool!
