I have the Cuisinart vertical waffle maker. It works great...just pour in the top and cook. Very little mess and easy to clean up.

And Waffle Makers are interesting appliances,
However I think you will find little difference in overall performance of different WMs, it is sort of like baking a cake you can only bake it so fast.
I have been using cooking spray on our 1960s Sears Kenmore waffle maker for well over 25 years and it works great and the grids are not the least bit gummed up or sticky, the waffles taste better if not soaked in fat and have less calories so you can eat more.

The flip design is left over from the days of cast iron stoves. Every once in a while I hear a story about my grandmother slaving over one of those big coal burning stoves well into the 1970's. The waffle makers for those fit into one of the grates, and flipped around to cook each side.
