rust in DW tubs

I have rust in my Maytag DC402

it was not there when I fixed it

can rust develop quickly

Not necessarily

It depends on whether it's surface rust or coming up from underneath. Frequently, I find that some piece of twist-tie or other steel/iron-based bit of trash flecked off and landed in the sump, and laid there for a while--the resulting rust stained the porcelain, but could be scrubbed off relatively easily with a bit of Comet.

Usually, if it's rusting out, you'll see a different texture to it, where it becomes apparent that the rust is coming through and/or dislodging the porcelain.

If it looks to be a touch of surface rust, I'd try cleaning the stain with a bit of cleanser and seeing if it goes away, then keeping an eye on it to see if it comes back.

Also...

If you've got a bad area of rack you aren't aware of yet, you could have corroded debris landing in the sump from that.
