Rustoleum for an outer tub?

Has anybody fixed surface rust inside an outer tub on a vintage washing machine? If so, what would be the preferred method? Would Rustoleum primer and paint do the trick? Fortunately, there is not perforation or leaks, and I would like to keep it that way if possible.

Also, I checked the internal valve of the pump, and it looks badly corroded. That seems like a contributing factor in the pump draining during agitation, when the valve should be closed off. I haven't ruled out the wig-wag just yet. Mine is set up so that the agitator shift lever closes the valve when ever it's in gear. That part seems to work.

Sorry for all the dumb questions, but I'm sort of new at this. This is probably going to teach me a lot more than I think I want to know! Thanks.

have you ever tried POR or thin marine epoxy? works good for me.. is your wig wag dirty and okey maybe that needs a good cleaning. i had one that was all icky and was getting stuck but a good clean an light lube and it was fine again. am sure there is some sort of seal or rubber ring on the pump flap you might need to take the pump apart and check. just an idea.. and no sir no question is ever dumb

Everything underneith is clean as a whistle. The wig-wag is clean, nothing stuck there. I took the hose off the pump, and noticed that the valve is so covered with rust it won't seal. I think that explains why it's pumping out water during agitation.

Yeah, I have given the insides of an outer tub a good spray of Rustoleum----just for good measure and I don't see how it could hurt.
For major rust coverage I would differ to POR-15----and they have their own website you can order from. Excellent product.
