Is it my imagination or are there few old Whirlpools around?
I mean, they bought up so many other brands, i would imagine that means they were very successful. Did they sell more units under the Kenmore name?

Hard tellin' not knowin'...

I would think many more Kenmore badged machines were sold.  Sears had tremendous marketing value back then plus their in house credit department.  Catalogue sales pushed Kenmore into very remote areas.

sad too.....that was the first Whirlpool I ever got to use, for a base line unit, it had plenty of cycles and options.....

if it wasn't so far away, I would give it a try and salvage it.....dag gone it!

Old Whirlpool Laundry & Other Appliances

Are around both under that brand and badged as Roper and Kenmore. You just have to know where to look. CL for instance has a good number in any given local listing.

My guess is WP made some very good appliances back in the day. Persons either kept them until they totally died or still are running

My Great Aunt

Had that same RCA Whirlpool for many many years,, I loved the brush lint filter, I always tried to see if it was running when I was at her house.

Childhood washer

<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;">We had this exact washer growing up.  Many fond memories, used to love to play with it!  (also got into a lot of trouble for doing so, but it was worth it!)

Not to fear

It wasn't scrapped. I got it last night. Here's some pictures in "as found" condition. Model #LJA44PW01, Serial #27212S24. Hope I got the numbers right. The data plate was difficult to read.

Didn't touch anything yet but that doesnt look like rust in the bottom of the tub to me. More like years of accumulated dirt. Along with some acorns and insulation from mouse activity. We'll see how well it cleans up. I don't feel the rust is as bad as it looks and could be dealt with. The back was already off. Maybe a bad sign? Any suggestions on where to start assessment of it would be appreciated.

Im kicking myself that I didn't suggest we look for the agitator cap. Im going to ask him to look for it. He and his wife had recently bought the house and everything of the previous owner went with the sale. They were pleasantly surprised to hear it wasnt going for scrap.

I explained this site to them and how members search and post online ads here of vintage stuff. They were surprised to hear that was how I found the ad and thought the site very neat.

I also got a 1980 GE DW they said works. Model #GSC470M-03WH, Serial #DG502967A. Getting rid of it due to kitchen remodel. I don't need it but it was going to be scrapped otherwise. If anyone here wants it they are welcome to it.

Would this be equipped with the lift up top panel? Also Im curious to know if the agitator cap would be chrome plated or black? [this post was last edited: 11/3/2015-19:11]

The Catskills !

So much history there.

Good for you for saving it. It's going to take some work to clean up, but it looks salvageable.

The underside of the lid, and the control panel look incredibly intact and unused. The underside of lid, at least in the pic, looks so shiny. That's not something one would expect from a used washer with a waterfall lint filter. One would expect to see splashing or soap scum residue. The body doesn't look scratched, dented, or bent and misshaped(as can easily happen with belt-drives) as though it's been moved several times.

I'm wondering if this is another lightly used machines that was simply set aside and forgot because the owner didn't know HOW to use it. If that's the case, it could be under all that mouse poo and dust, it will shine like the underside of that lid.
Here's hoping.
Just remember clean carefully and don't use anything that could scratch, or chemicals that can desolve graphics and paint, at least not the first wash. I'd put that machine outside, on a hard surface and get a hose and gently hose it down and out with cold or warm water. Do the dirt in layers. If you can remove the control panel with the graphics and wash that separate, that may help to preserve it.

I'm sure a agitator cap and lint filter will turn up. That's the least of your concerns now.

Good luck. I hope to see updated pics.

Nice to see it wasn't scrapped, congrats Ken!

It looks quite similar to my 1965 Inglis Superb, but mine is a single speed model. The "Gentle" cycle is only shorter!

The small knobs look similar to those of my Inglis-made 1964 RCA Whirlpool (it seems yours are white and the center is flat rather than concave?). This one also used to be a single speed 5 cycle model (that makes no sense!). I made it a two-speed.

Good save Ken - and like delaneymeagan said, it's amazing just how clean that lid underside appears after all these years. It could be a lightly used machine, set aside or just replaced and kept elsewhere vs. selling it? There have been worse looking units on aw.org - much worse - that were restored. But, who knows what lurks under all that's not viewable, until dis-assembled, eh?

@Delaney

I assume my locale (Ulster Hgts, NY) prompted you to mention "The Catskills"? Which is actually a misnomer because its not the true Catskill Mtns. I assume you were referring to the fact that this area was once a popular summer resort destination for mostly NYC Jewish residents? Its almost impossible to believe today as all the resorts are long gone. A few small bungalow colonies are still left. At one time this area was mobbed every summer. The larger establishments offered lavish, first-class accommodations. Many famous comedians/entertainers got their start here in what was referred to as "The Borscht Belt".

Ken you live in a beautiful area.   I have watched the youtube vids of the  The Pines Hotel and Kutchers  (urban exploration).   Back on topic...  I had a feeling when I clicked on the link and it was deleted that someone had come to the rescue.  Made my morning that You are going to give it a chance.   I do not know which agitator cap it would have had.  Chrome always looks nice.  Art

Great save Ken, CONGRATS!

To answer your questions, I have a similar washer with the manual "magic mix" lint filter and the agitator cap would be black. The chrome cap was reserved for the "upper end models". However if you find a chrome cap, use it!

Also, yes the to lifts up. Watch this video!

Kevin

There are some exceptions I guess. The original agitator cap in my 1964 RCA Whirlpool is chrome and it has the magic mix filter.

Wow

Never saw this before. Thanks for posting. Four Seasons is/was two miles from my house. The family that owned/operated was Zirt. Went to school with their daughter and son. Mrs Zirt was an elementary teacher in my school. The building at the bottom left of the picture shaped like a T was their house.

I say was because about four-five years ago it was purchased by Hasidic Jews so that was the end of it operating as a vacation colony. The summer tourists have been replaced by Hasidic & Orthodox here.

The building shown at 1:13 was located at a different summer place further down the road (Tann's Melody Inn) and is now gone.

I see the copyright on the documentary is 2009. That would have been shortly before it was sold.

Yes, remember the commotion in the colony

Regarding the offer from a "developer" and that was a key focal point of the film.

Ironically it was wider acceptance at mainstream vacation/entertainment places by Reformed and other mainline Jewish faiths that did in "the Catskills".

The various Hasidic Jewish sects are another matter. Not surprised they purchased Four Seasons as they have been on a buying spree throughout much of upstate NY. Orange County is in an uproar over Kyras Joel's expansion plans. IIRC Peekskill is having its share of worries as well.

Our '62 LJA32VW had a chrome Surgilator cap and chrome brush filter.  It definitely was not a TOL model ... basic Normal Action & Gentle Action cycles, hot/warm/cold, hi/med/low.

Thinking back

Mother's washer which was exactly same as above did have a chrome framed brush lint filter and the cap on agitator was chrome as well.

Remember the former all so well because hated cleaning the darn thing. The latter because that shiny chrome against the black agitator was just stunning. The cap had the famous "Whirlpool" logo in center surrounded by wording.

Agitator like the one in Phil's video above? The lint filter is chrome. Its not pretty. You can see the bristles are deformed and rust stained. I found it on the floor under the machine when we moved it.

I spoke to the guy I got the washer from and he informed me the house (which he purchased from the original family) was a summer vacation place until he purchased. So Im thinking the washer is probably low mileage having been used only in the summer. [this post was last edited: 11/4/2015-19:12]

Ken, I just found an ad that I had saved in my computer which shows a washer that's very similar to yours with the chrome agitator cap.
