The manse currently has Uverse for Tv/internet. I would like to get basic tv/internet for the cracker cabana that stays in the woods. I know nothing about satellite internet and would gladly look at all thoughts and ideas!

First of all; said cracker cabana...what options are there? Satellite is traditionally the last resort for internet access...although UVerse may not be available; who is the carrier? They would probably be happy to sell you Dish Network + DSL and you'll probably be happier with it; another alternative is using a wi-fi hotspot using the local cellular provider (Verizon/AT&T/US Cellular). Depending on location, one may be better than the other. HughesNet has never been particularly well thought of and is pricey.

Just remember...

Satalilte Internet, has a delay, and is not usuable for Online Video or Movie Streaming Services, Gaming, Voice over Internet Protocol (this includes Vonage, or Web Cams, or Skype).

I've also been told your connection speed, can really vary, esp during peak usage times, and... if it's cloudy. I'd assume it's about on par with DSL, or better than dialup, but, if you can get a hardwired Cable Modem, or Mobile Internet Stick from a cell phone carrier, I think you'd come out ahead.

Don't Go With....

HughesNet, whatever you do.

Last year, I think it was, Consumer Reports did a report on Internet providers, and HughesNet came out dead last.

In fact, they were right behind Mediacom, which is mind-boggling. Mediacom's service is so bad, it's enough to make you wonder if you really need Internet. Reliability is such that if someone at Mediacom dropped an anvil, I would not trust it to fall to the ground. [this post was last edited: 6/1/2014-05:15]

'Mobile Internet Stick'

I regularly use one of these (on a 'pay-as-you-go' tariff) with no real problems. 'Credit' is a little expensive, and does 'expire' after a month or three, but if the cabin is only used occasionally, you only need to buy credit when it is actually being used. Quoted bandwidth is 'better' than my hardwired Internet connection, and has been plenty for anything I've done with the Internet. I would recommend one to anyone who needs an 'occasional' connection or a 'backup' connection.

All best

P.S. It may be as well to check available signal strength from your chosen provider by getting someone with a cellphone from that provider to visit before you buy... ;-)

my internet is satellite.

If there is ANY broadband alternative, it would be better.

Satellite net is AWFUL.

It's the laws of physics - the satellite is about 35,000 km away. The signal has to travel from your dish, all the way out to the satellite and all the way back. Loading a page takes lots of to-and-fro so it is frustratingly slow.

avoid it if you can.
