Scarce mid 60s Coldspot Spacemaster (Sundberg-Ferrar?)

Dunno why seller thinks this is 80s…anyway: 1st Time in decades I've seen a Spacemaster in this configuration. $75. I'd love to have it for the novelty--stylish looking thing, too.

I think this was the model that you convert the upper left compartment to a freezer or refrigerator. Samsung has a model that does this. It has all been done before.

Just about everything Samsung does has been done before.

 

The cold controls are of similar design to my mom's '75 Coldspot side-by-side.  What I don't see is the "Air Control" that supposedly adjusted the temperature in the freezer section.  Maybe that's all the "Convertible" control is.  Still, I can't imagine needing to store that much fresh meat in the convertible zone (not that meat is all that upper section is intended for).  Isn't that a meat drawer under the clear-front crisper anyway?

 

Personally, I'd want the extra freezer space, so if I were fridge shopping back when this one was new I'd not have considered it.  Besides, the price would have been sky high.

 

Still it's a rare bird, and Coldspots from this period seem to run forever, and quietly at that.  My mom's was still purring along at 33 years old when we replaced it with a larger KitchenAid.

Had that great old pre Whirlpool designed compressor, Seeger was building it years before the Whirlpool takeover, Whirlpool was smart to keep it because it literally would run forever..oh yeah, it was rotary and so well designed, you could unplug them and plug them back in and they would start right back up....no waiting!

Those Coldspots ARE good. This is my 1963….and quiet really sums it up (Until recently….my freezer fan has a helluva squeal going on from a bad bearing). This particular unit has a super cold control on it as well--it maintains flawlessly. Hoping that it will keep on another 55 years!
