I was in a school bus zone for one year for 6th grade. 1972. The bus was an International Harvester, no padding. Had problems climbing hills. Had a double clutch transmission. Driver would hit the brakes hard to get us to sit down.

My bus was mostly International Loadstar, and I think the body was Thomas. Then in HS, I went to another school, and we had an International, but that poor bus was way under powered! Later on they got a new Chevy gas, that was a little bit better and had an Auto so some of the staff could drive it.

No bus until 7th grade, as the elementary schools were only a few blocks from home, and I walked unless it was very bad weather. For junior high & HS, most of the time in the mornings, our neighborhood carpool (my mom, and a couple of the neighbor ladies) took us. Usually rode the bus in the afternoon, but walked the 1.5 miles if weather was nice.

Most of the bus fleet was International or Ford chassis, and a few GM's, with Blue Bird or Wayne bodies. Most were new, but rememember one old Blue Bird with GM chassis that was from the late 40'- early 50's. It had a gasoline engine, unlike most of the newer models that were diesel. It had seen better days to say the least.

I never rode the school bus to school. The only time I rode one was when we went on field trips locally. For longer distance trips the school would rent motor coaches. However, my father has been a school bus mechanic so I know a fair bit about them. He used to bring me toy school buses that he would get at training seminars, etc. I believe all of the ones they have now are air conditioned.
