I just happen to be looking over the Super Threads and just keep my eye off the adorable (hope you don't mind me saying that) Soberleaf's school picure. Since school is starting back soon I thought it would be great to post your favoriate school picture of yourself. I'm posting this at work so I don't have one of myself at this time, but will put one up late today.

Forgot to say..Don't you just love the NHS Glasses..I got some a few years later but haven't posted that pic!!

Thankfully, there are no school pics online....there is, however, a pic with half of our year in it.....There were too many of us for one photo.

I survived Catholic school

Here I am in first grade, 1958. I'm standing on the right NEXT TO the kid wearing suspenders and a bow tie.

You can see that segregation was still alive in this picture.

Like the catholic school.

By any chance was this teacher/nun from order of Sister of Charity of The Blessed Virgin Mary?

Dominicans

Taught in many of the parochial schools in NJ. Notice the size of the class - this is ONE class, not several combined. Sr. Theresa de Paul managed to keep all of us in line and teach us nice penmanship too!

I did the same routine, although it was 10 years later.

12 years of Catholicism shoved down my throat. It took me even longer to recover from it.

Hunting class is kinda pass/fail, isn't it?

Oh, man! Sandy, that cave drawing was classic. Now I gotta clean my monitor. I simply must learn not to drink in front of the computer when reading this forum...

yep, it's a BVM sister

They were known for their "flat top" veils. The same order (Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary) ran the infamous Our Lady of Angels school in Chicago, the one where about 100 kids and about half a dozen were killed in a fire just before Christmas in c. 1958. The school was ancient, had no fire doors, no fire escapes, and no central alarm that rang to a fire department (a primitive alarm rang a bell in the principal's office).

I am second row far right. I am still friends with several people in this photo.

Meanwhile, over at Sacred Heart Academy....

...can you say "Good morning, Sis-ter"??

Yes, it's kindly Sister Mary Leonette of the Dominican order of nuns. Unfortunately, not all of the nuns were as nice as Sr. Leonette....

About 1/3 of the kids in this photo went on to public high school after graduating from eighth grade at SHA (San Diego, CA) and I am still friends with several of them.

Yikes!!! It's Sr. Mary Assumpta!!

Meet the First Holy Communion class of 1964 at Sacred Heart parish, San Diego. This group included both the parochial school kids and the "publics", i.e. Catholic students who went to (gasp!!) pagan public schools but who attended after-school Catechism classes once a week.

Fortunately, I am not hiding in the photo (sorry, Episcopalian here) but I got my hands on these choice photos as co-chair of my high school 30th reunion. We made a photo CD with class photos of all eight public schools, all three parochial schools (about 1/3 of whom ended up in our high school), and two middle schools. We skipped the high school class photos since most people still had their yearbooks.

The first communion class photo was displayed at poster size at the reunion and more than one classmate was embarrassed to have been discovered by others at the party.

The dreaded battle-axe Sister Mary Assumpta is the nun on the far right, everyone in the area was afraid of her. She taught second grade at SHA and also taught First Communion prep classes to the "publics". The public kids in Cathechism certainly said their prayers---in deep gratitude that they weren't in parochial school with Sr. Assumpta!!

and here are the 8th grade graduates

Once again with Sr. Leonette (the principal) who was also their Kindergarten teacher.

Note the effect of Vatican II: Sister is wearing a modified habit (yes, she has hair like the rest of us), no more uniforms, and no beanies for the girls. Women no longer had to cover their heads in church, so the beanies no longer had any function.

Sacred Heart?

Isn't that where the lovely and talented Miss Joan Crawford sent Christina to finish her years in high school?

What's up with the one girl in the first pic where it says "Academy"?

Tiger PJ's

Oh, lordy, Pete, those tiger-stripe PJ's are a blast! Reminds me of the movie 'A Christmas Story' and the bunny-suit PJ's in there!

Well, I couldn't find my school pictures on this computer as it's new.

But I found a picture from that time... That girl is my sister, she's two years older...

(atention brazilian members that also join the brazilian comunity. Please never mention this picture there. You know... they believe I'm 29 LOL)
