Scorched dryer ball

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I was using my laptop sitting right on top of the dryer the whole time and I didn't notice anything strange, I bet it was the dryer. My Bradford machine. I STILL haven't gotten that safety thermostat replaced, I bet that's why it didn't shut off or anything. One of the shirts in that load came out with scorch marks too, I thought it was grease at first, but I guess not. I won't be using THAT dryer again until that new thermostat is in, I gotta find one first though...

The poor thing looks like a muddy echidna. There are all kinds of generic thermostats that you could get for your dryer. The original thermostat should have the temperature marked on it, but if the dryer is overheating on the safety thermostat, the operating thermostat(s) must be bad also. Please be careful.

BALLS!!

Do these actually make any difference? Have seen them over here but cant see how they are worth a tenner ($17.50 ish)

Jamie it sounds like the problem isn't the safety thermostat in your Bradford Dryer, the problem is probably in the OPERATING thermostat, although there is a chance that both thermostats are bad. All dryers (even really vintage ones) have at least two thermostats. The operating thermostat turns the heat on and off when the dryer is at 135 degrees or so and turns the heat back on when the temperature drops slightly. The safety thermostat is set much higher at 175 to 200 degrees to turn the heat off in case the operating thermostat fails.

They move the load around more, fluff the load up, cut drying time, and prevent the clothes clothes from rubbing to eliminate static. They are supposed to replace fabric softener and dryer sheets, but I use them along with my Downy. Things dry faster and come out fluffier!
