Hi everyone! Hope you are all well. I was browsing Ebay the other day, and found a listing for this 60’s-era Westinghouse hand mixer. I already have two others of this design in the collection, but both are different colors, and neither were this complete, so considering that it’s price was about the same as a modern Chinese mixer from walmart, I had to have it. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the history on these. They also seem quite elusive compared to other mixers of the era. Why is this?
Thanks,
Thatwasherguy.

nothing after ~1970 ?

I have not seen any Westinghouse small appliances or electronics(including industrial/commercial) made after about 1970,so they may have quit this stuff after about that time.

That is correct...

Westinghouse sold their small appliance division to Hamilton Beach around that time.  In fact, I think you can still buy a Hamilton Beach roaster that looks like a Westinghouse roaster but more cheaply made.

Neat find Westinghouse hand mixer

Have you tried it out yet, in general Westinghouse small appliances were pretty bad. Hopefully this one works well. It’s neat looking. I always love the design at Westinghouse appliances.

But whether you’re talking about irons toasters electric frying skillets Westinghouse was one of the worst, they often had bad controls, my mother had a Westinghouse iron that melted down sitting on the ironing board. The whole soul plate melted into a pile of molten aluminum because the thermostat stuck. I’ve had numerous Westinghouse electric skillets and I never got any of them to work properly. I hope your hand mixers, better let us know how it works . GE had much more durable small appliances for sure.

cfz2882...
I think you’re right. I recall reading on here that WH sold their major appliance division to WCI at the end of ‘74, and that their small appliance division was put on the chopping block a few years prior.

neptunebob...
Thanks for the info! I never realized that Hamilton beach was who produced WH small appliances after they were sold. That’s neat that you can still get a vintage WH roaster under the Hamilton beach name. I always love seeing old designs still in production.

Combo52...
It hasn’t arrived yet, but I own two other Westys like it, and have used them a fair bit. All in all, they seem to work well. I wasn’t sure if they would have the kind of power I wanted, given that the motors are only rated for 100W. But, they appear to be geared way down, so they produce A LOT of torque, to the point that they have no trouble mixing icing (I don’t usually do this with them, as I don’t like that much stress on their 60+ year old internals). They also have enough top end to beat eggs. In fact, I’ve actually found that I like the pink one so much, that I use it as my main mixer. Other than a couple of fans (which seem about on par with others of the time), I can’t speak for the rest of their products, as I’ve never owned or used them. I once saw an ad for an earlier version of this mixer dated 1957, so I’m thinking that the design may pre-date some of their financial troubles that seem to have driven a lot of the cost cutting. On another note, I found an ad/owner’s manual to one of those WH electric skillets about 3 years ago at a thrift store. It was shaped such that it was clearly placed inside the skillet, and the front cover was an advertisement. It then opens up into the actual owner’s manual. I’ll pull it out tomorrow and get some pictures.

Thanks,
Thatwasherguy.

combo52's denigration

Thatwasherguy,

Please pay no attention to Combo52's assessment of Westinghouse small appliances. It never fails, if someone gets a new vintage appliance and they want to show it off to us, if it's something Combo doesn't like he has to denigrate it.

Apparently it builds his ego to rain on others parades, so to speak.

You didn't ask for a review of the mixer, or Westinghouse appliances, nor did anyone else. It is his modus operandi to speak negatively of people's new acquisitions or items posted on Shopper's Square.

Don't feel badly. Westinghouse made some fine small appliances. I have the mixer, I mention and have used it under some moderately heavy loads and it breezes through them. I have a wonderful Westinghouse blender with an infinitely variable speed control and a Westinghouse coffee maker that I used extensively (in the days when I drank coffee. Lol)

All are very well made and have functioned flawlessly. Never had one problem or issue with anyone of them.

You have a right to be proud of your new acquisition. Your own use will determine it's worthiness. If you collect other Westinghouse appliances you can make your own determination of the quality.

Combo52's words are solely opinions, very biased ones, and not facts.

Congratulations on your new find, and please enjoy!!!

Westinghouse handmixer

That washer guy, glad you’re enjoying the Westinghouse mixer as I said in my post I’ve always loved their styling and design. I have never had any experience with the hand mixer. Hopefully, this one you’re buying will work well too.

Barry, I guess your handle is aptly named reactor. There is absolutely no reason for your negative post about me you go from being very complementary in one post to being very negative. I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you were warned about this and I’m going to have a talk with Robert this weekend.

The things that I mention in post number are not opinions. They are actual facts that did occur if I ever post opinions You will see on the editorial page, lol

negativity

You may not see your negativity, Combo52, but everyone else does. A member is proud and happy to have found a Westinghouse item so you go off on how bad (based on your perception) some Westinghouse appliances are with phrases such as "some of the worst."

This post was for a member to share something that he was happy to find and proud of. You take it over as an opportunity to post negative comments on select Westinghouse appliances. Then you state your globalized opinion that "GE had the most durable small appliances, for sure.". Yes, Combo that is an opinion, your opinion and not a fact. Did you test every small appliance GE has ever made in comparison the equivalent small appliance that Westinghouse ever made? No. Then your statement is an opinion based on your very small sampling of Westinghouse appliances small appliances. Talk about seeing the world through false generalization.

That statement was a direct attack against a members acquisition. It did not need to be made. And as usual, you try to present your opinion as fact.

Yes, many if not most of your posts are opinions and not facts. Of course you don't realize this but virtually everyone else does. This site serves as a platform for you to spout your opinions and biases.

You argue incessantly when your opinions and/or your biased are questioned as if you think you are the only one on this site allowed to have an opinion.

I have seen you call people names, denigrate them and verbally abuse them just because you feel your opinion is the ultimate one and can't be questioned.

I do call you out when you hurt others on this site. This site is not called "John Lefevers Automatic Washer.Org.". It belongs to everyone. Everyone has the right to express their opinion and not be attacked by you if it differs from yours.

You call people out when they disagree with your opinions. You can't stand it, however , when your opinions are questioned or your treatment of others members on this site is questioned. You can dish it out, but you certainly can't take it.

When it comes to negativity, when someone gets a new vintage item, why can't you just say congratulations and leave it at that.

Our member just found a nice vintage mixer. You tell him how bad, among "the worst" you feel some Westinghouse appliances are then, then you tell him how another manufactures small appliances are superior to Westinghouse as they are more durable. Totally unnecessary comment.

So many times you bring up everything negative opinion you have of a given item, or as today, you bring up your negative opinions of the manufacturer. Let someone enjoy their acquisition and let it go at that. Let the post be about them and not you and your opinions.

I used to own a Westinghouse Steam Iron from the 50’s that had an open handle that I bought for $3.00 at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. It was one of the very best irons that I’ve ever used. Yes, it got hot as hell, but it was excellent for ironing starched shirts. Before I retired I used to wear a freshly starched and ironed long sleeved shirt to work daily. That old Westinghouse Steam Iron made quick work ironing those shirts every week.

I later donated it to a Rummage Sale at the Human Services Dept. along with several other small vintage appliances. The co-worker that bought that iron loved it too!

I hope thatwasherguy gets lots of joy using his “new” vintage Westinghouse Hand Mixer.

Eddie

Westinghouse irons

Around 1999 or 2000 I bought an NOS Westinghouse steam iron with the original box and papers. It looks about the same vintage as the box in the OP’s photos, perhaps a little newer. The seller said it had been given to her mom for opening a new bank account, and never used. I’ve been using it regularly ever since with no problems except for the shot of steam feature, which seems to have seized up. That isn’t a big enough deal to be worth trying to fix.

Starting to Get the Mixing Fever!

My mother had the mainstay Sunbeaam hand mixer, while a General Electric hand mixer had been given to us by a neighbor across the street when the Sunbeam supposedly broke, but I haven't seen that GE, as it disappears from the oven drawer all our hand mixers had been stored in to conveniently made things to bake...

Your Westinghouse miser is cool, THAWASHERGUY, and I'm sure every one of those mixers had been made well regardless of brand and somehow each carrying their own unique design...

May you get an eternity of use from it no matter what!

Westinghouse portable..

Pay no attention to the nay sayers, this is as good as any portable made back then, My husbands Mothers only mixer for well over 50 years, It finally quit, She got a new Kitchen Aid portable, which lasted about 5 years, I found her another Westinghouse and she used it the rest of her life, Westinghouse made basically 3 portables the first made from the early 50s until 58 was a metal housing variable speed model, then this one which came out in 58 and was made up to somewhere about 65-66, then they had a more streamlined model , then they quit making portable appliances, My take is , some Westinghouse smalls were really good, some ok, Their electric frypans were about as good as any on the market, the waffle irons ok but not up to Sunbeams, their stand mixers just under a Sunbeam, the portable mixers better than Sunbeam, equal to GE far better than Hamilton Beach, the Westinghouse deep fryer was the best of all overall, My Mother and Aunt had Westinghouse steam irons which they used many many years.

BUT!

All this is my opinion, John is like me, he likes what he likes and he is honest about his opinions, Ive known John 20 years, I dont agree with him on everything, but that is no big deal, John is as generous decent and honest a person as I know, and he sure will help you with any problem, He has much better luck with GE stuff than I do,,lol
