I need to remove the case from a microwave oven. Two of the screws are a sort of security fastener that has a pin in the middle that fits into the end of the driver. What might that kind of screw/driver be called so I can attempt to find one?

It's a Galanz microwave oven. My grandmother burned something while reheating, so now the unit smells bad. I want to disassemble it to clean the smoke residue. This is the 3rd time she has had an "accident" burning something in a microwave. One of the previous incidents, my dad took the oven apart, cleaned it, and they've been using it. I vaguely recall that he ran into the same issue with security screws on that oven (an Emerson), and made a tool to deal with it (he's crafty that way).

My sister was down today, bought her a new one. So there's no urgency now in getting it done, but I still want to clean it up.

We have an excess of microwaves. My dad still has a spare from her previous burn incident. I have an extra Sharp Platinum Series (with the touchpanel integrated into the door) because my house included a GE OTR unit. Unfortunately, when I last used the Panasonic a couple years ago, some of the display segments had gone bad, which is a problem because it has a scrolling/interactive display for feedback on settings. RJ donated the Galanz from his theater room to granny a couple weeks ago when the touchpanel on her previous Kenmore went wonky, which I also have stashed in my garage. Sears has discontinued majority of the parts on it, I checked.

Oh, Ok. I thought maybe you were trying to fix it, which is generally fruitless since the main failure in these things seems to be the magnetron tube, and it's usually cheaper to just replace the whole microwave than try to replace the tube.

Plus I understand there's usually a big nasty capacitor in there that can give you a most unwelcome greeting.

I had an little old 800 watt "Amana" (really made by Hitachi) that conked out shortly after I bought this house. I tried several times to replace a blown internal fuse, and then realized the magnetron was gone, found out what just the part would cost, and finally gave up and got a nice big Kenmore Elite. The Amanatachi worked quite well for about 10 years, though. It was nice in that it didn't have a turntable but didn't need one.

Hey VolvoGuy

You can make a Phillips Screwdriver with the following:

Tropicana, Grey Goose and Milk of Magnesia.

Making security bits...

I'm sure I know how he made the bits; it's quite a simple matter to clam a regular torx bit in a vice and drill the appropriate hole in it. Painfully easy if one has a drill press, merely simple with a hand drill and some patience. Makes me wonder why they bother with Torx Plus Tamper-resistant...
