My beloved Maytag seems to have developed a couple problems as well as the BD Kenmore and now my 1-18 too! The Maytag has had this problem for a little while (less than a month) but it seems to be getting worse and now I'm afraid to use it! In the vid you can hear it makes a noise while it's accelerating, but the noise that scares me comes as the machine reaches full speed. The load in there is a very very small load of synthetics. Also, when it's agitating, as the agitator begins to reverse each arc, the agitator vibrates quite a bit then smoothes out until it begins to slow again to go back the other way... Does my Maytag need some serious help?

Jamie,

I'm sorry I can't offer any suggestions as I'm just getting into Maytags. But what problem is your 1-18 experiencing?

My 1-18 I think is just pretty much worn out. It's getting MUCH MUCH louder and it's having trouble releasing the tub brake now and then. I'm thinkin I'll try and sell it to someonew who wants it. Frankly, I don't feel like messing with it becuase I find it rather lacking in drama and no matter how much or little I put in it, I am shocked by it's poor performance. It has the worst rinsing results of any of my washers, and I already use 1/4 of the soap I usually would! Even with two rinses, the second rinse still turns into a "slime rinse." A thick layer of slime develops over top and then leaves a yucky white residue on the load after it's done. BLECH!

Hi Jamie,

Sounds like the Maytag needs a tub bearing kit. If you grab the tranny beneath the gearcase and shake back and forth you will notice some play between the tranny and the tub bearing. That is , most likely, where the knocking sound is coming from.

Jamie:

COLDSPOT is right. Check this out first. A tub bearing is about a 2 hours duty if you want to do it right. Otherwise, I could be a bad tranny. Not common however.
