Just thought of something about the dust in NYC on September 11 2001.
Watching some of the programs,I noticed that in some stores that were selling clothes in & near the vicinity of the WTC,had dust from those buildings on them as well as the clothes on people. I'm wondering what washers & detergents would have been capable of removing anywhere up to all of that dust from clothes.

I think most stores would have wrote those clothes off as damaged beyond repair.
In that show you saw, did they mention what was in that dust? Asbestos, concrete dust, human hair, etc. Just being around those clothes could have led to serious health consequences for the people handling them.

I am in agreement with whirlcool.  These clothing items were contaminated with potentially toxic substances.  More than likely they should have been destroyed and were not salvagable.

I concur with the other entries as above-the clothes would be so badly contaminated that even the rag and fiber recyclers wouldn't want them.Bet in the period as the 9-11 cleanup continued-lots of clothes like that were sent to the landfills.Nothing elese you could do with them.and they would be too contaminated to incinerate.
