Has anyone seem the GE line of washing machines in Brazil?

I dont know how much they are based on the US design but what a nice looking washing machine, with window lids to boot!

Cool! The tub and agitator appear to be similar to the "Plastic GE" here, but with a more compact cabinet, detergent dispenser, and a window lid!!

Wonder if these could be made portable...IMHO GE should have used the "plastic" mechanism for a portable/compact machine and NOT full-size! Would have probably fared a lot better too!

The Brastemp and Consul brands also make nice looking models, these brands belong to the Whirlpool corp.

I wonder why North America has boxy looking top loaders when the rest of the world seem to be doing something different.

windows everywhere

Hi guys,
Manufacturers discovered that people down here like to know what goes on inside the machines. All brands, virtually, have a see thru lid .
The funny thing is that this features is present not only in washers but also in dishwashers and driers.
I don´t know why I can´t upload any picture now, but if you are interested let me know and I´ll send some pictures later .

Boxy Top Loaders

Hi arrrooohhh.

My gut instinct is to say we are still not yet on the metric system in the US part of North America, so I guess we have not yet gotten the point that life does not revolve around our country......LOL Why then should we be up-to-date on other issues?

But actually, seriously though, I can't tell by your post if you find the "T/L" strange/annoying or the "Boxy"

Washers and dryers here tend to be in the basements (of older homes) where water and sewer and gas and electical services are quick and easy to get at. (Many basments are unfinished "open" space.) Those homes without basments have the laundry area in a garage, or a closet in the house. Newer homes tend to have the W&D near the bedrooms which are sometimed on the second story. (spelled "Storey" in some coutries eh?) Oddly.. still no floor drain in case of a leak. Oh well...

Now renters/apartment dwellers tend to have smaller machines located in kitchens...

a standard US washer is 67cm x 67cm (27" square)
compact machines are 60cm x 60cm (24" square)
or even 55 x 55 cm (22 " square")

So the size and looks dont matter to us since we don't generally see them in main living space.

Speed ==> Quick
Convenience ==> easy to load
Capacity ==> large.

This seem to be what we have been after for decades.
and IMHO older "Consumer Reports" comparison and ratings magazines gave their seal of approval to T/L and they caught on. Apparently F/L had problems with excessive suds generated by older soaps and detergents. Also soap scum when using "real" soap in a F/L caused problems in hard-water areas. Again, that is why... i'm guessing... they fell out of favor here.

Just my opinion, and as I have said before EVERYBODY is entitled to MY opinion... LOL

In Australia top loaders are most common, but they too tend to be more streamlined in style than North American offerings.

We have the latest Westinghouse line of top loaders offering window lids, and what a great feature that is!

Hi Arrroohhh.

What can I say we like everthing BIG! I am guessing our standard stoves(cookers)here are 75 cm wide (30") in that we throw a huge turkey in there for our "Thanksgiving" holiday.I believe most everone else has std 60cm (24") {Can you tell I am a bit of a self-proclaimed chef as a hobby? LOL)

I have found UK sites and love their 60cm double ovens with pyrolitic self-clean. Don't understand the heating elements on the side of the oven cavity, but researching.I think its actually cool that most appliances elswhere tend to be 60cm. Mix and match and rotate their locations!

Send me/us some Australian sites!!! any appliance will do. but I digress...

How can we entice you to photograph the tub and post it? oh and a close-up of the control panel would be MAHHHHVELOUS!!
Who is putting out Westinghouse over there? Are they their own stand-alone company?

Toogleswitch, the Australian appliance industry is now entirely owned by Electrolux, similar to the Electrolux/Frigidaire senario in the states, they have a lot of brand names they could use, but are concentrating on Simpson, Westinghouse and Electrolux, with Electrolux fridges dual branded as Electrolux/Kelvinator and ranges as Electrolux/Chef.

Makes sense, as Wesinghouse here too would be by Electrolux (Sweden). I dont think they would DARE badge anything "Westinghouse." It was a POS brand for many years.

We see Westinghouse brand microwave ovens, and their badge on very small junky kitchen appliances

Frigidaire has taken off very well in that "IMHO" it was a very popular brand in the US (but not in my region of the country) decades ago.

I really like their Frid-GE-more front-load washer that I currently own.

I also had a great Electrolux (Frigidaire) dryer with a Sears badge on it. It was the only one available at a reasonable price with a stainless-steel drum and controls in the front. I needed to install it under a kitchen countertop. (would that be "have it fitted under a workbench" as one would hear in the UK?)

In fact I like all their appliances. They are at a nice low price here and I'm sure GE and Whirlpool and Maytag (our "holy-trinity") are fuming mad! (meaning "very angry" not "crazy" LOL.)

Electrolux => other badges

Unknowingly, I discovered in another thread that "Wascomat" commercial laundry machines are another Electolux badge!

They are indestructible and an industry standard here. Gorgeous... and like Asko-s no rubber boot (door-seal)!!!

I always wanted a commercial "Wascomat" but they problem is that they drain by gravity. (no pump to cause maintenance problems and an automatic drain-out in a power failure.)

So my wish has come true.. I have the domestic version of a "wascomat" in my Electo-sux Frid-GE-more! (I'll have to deal with a door-boot.)

FATE ==> just can't be avoided!!
