Should I Buy This GE?

This GE pair popped up on Facebook a couple of weeks ago for $100.  The seller just dropped the price to $65 for the pair.  I haven't seen them in person.  However, she said the dryer is fine.  However, the washer is noisy and leaks oil from the transmission. 

 

Are parts readily available for these machines?  What is the level of difficulty for servicing them?

Nice looking pair. Transmissions are getting hard to come by. I’ve never rebuilt one of these transmissions yet either. Otherwise, parts are still around on eBay, etc.

grab and hold on to them....a tranny will turn up eventually.....

really simple machines to work on.....a real clean cut easy to work on as well....

for that price, you can't go wrong......

The dryer alone is worth the asking price.

Better move quick, in my area they probably would have been gone already at that price.

Just baout every belt-driven tranny leaks a bit. GE Filter-Flo's are long-lasting, great performers. If it needs a bit of repair, you'll be glad you did it and you'll love the results

I'd say go for it, but mainly for the washer. We had a similar pair years back and the dryer was honestly awful. It ran far too hot and wrinkled everything. The washer on the other hand was awesome! Best cleaning washer I've ever used. Great capacity, if it has the spiral agitator you can literally pack it and everything will turn over and get clean. Definitely not the quietest washer ever but go for it, even if it does need some repairs.

Got the Set for $50!

When I went over to pick up the set today, the lady was so happy get them out of her garage that she took $50 instead of the original $65 price.  The washer has some rust on the lid and tub opening.  I can fix that.  My Dad owned an auto body shop, so I handle that.   But I don't know if I can match the paint color.  But it will be fun to work on and problem solve.  Otherwise, the paint finish on the washer and dryer is in excellent shape. 

 

The lint filter on the washer is missing, along with the mini-basket. 

 

If I'm reading the serial numbers correctly, this pair was probably made in May 1990.  I'll set them aside until I get the Maytag finished!

2nd rinse

rarely needed on a Filter-Flo. Keep your eyes peeled, you'll find the lint filter and softener dispenser quicker than you'll find a mini-basket.
Fine machine, great wash, great rinse, excellent lint removal, plenty of cycles, fine clothing turnover---Congratulations!

Let us know what the EXTRA CLEANING CYCLE does.But with great washing and rinsing from a GE, you may never need it.

The extra clean cycle should be a long wash and 2 rinses, at least that's what ours did. Never really used it because it cleaned and rinsed very well on the normal cycle.

I agree with Dustin’s comment about the dryer. I had a late 70s GE set and the dryer ran so hot it would melt anything that had a stitch of polyester in it. I can only imagine what dudes did back in the day with their leisure suits!

I always kept the heat setting lower than “regular” and it did just fine.

BTW, great find, great price and a beautiful set!

their Dryers, properly maintained, were very good dryers. But like any of the others, you had to check the thermostats once in a while. I've had several that were just fine, but only one that heated a polyester mattress pad so hot it balled it up, and could not be unfolded. We also knew it was on the way out!
