Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

but the interior of that 1957 UNIMATIC is very classy. Is that the only year they did the grey on gray on grey?

Well sort of, in 1956 they introduced the 3-Ring Agitator, which had gray rings on a black bakelite agitator column, with a gray pulsator. In 1957 it was the same except for the Black agitator column was changed to plastic and it was a lighter gray.

If you look at today’s Picture of the Day you can see what the 1956 Agitator looks like.

Oh and before someone asks, no I did not force this POD up today, its a total coincidence that the interior shot of the 1956 shows up into today's POD! YAY for timing.

Thanks for all the photos, guys! One more question: What is the purpose of the vertical speed-bumps in the tubs of the Uni-and Roller-matics? Since these tubs didn't index, I'm guessing it wasn't for scrubbing power. Was it to help grab the clothes and keep the load balanced when spins began? Or maybe to keep clothes turning over in their little groupings?

Again, I kick myself for selling my 1-18. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!!! As I am not a repair/restore person, I was so lucky to find one that worked perfectly. I just plugged it in and loaded it up. AND I SOLD IT. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGH!

We also need an interior picture of the regular WO-65 Unimatic as well...its circulator column is a little different than the WO-65-2.

Oops...just read the above in Robert's post!

Patrick, your 1-18 tub sure is interesting; it looks like they substituted the row of holes near the bottom of the tub on mine with a staggered row actually at the bottom. I noticed that yours has a hinge-operated lidswitch as well instead of the "center" switch.

Eddy, I just love that sexy dark blue porcelain tub on your machine. Was that just for Canadian models?

Also, Frigilux, I remember the instruction manual directing the user to load the clothes in groups within those "speed bumps". I think your first guess is right.

Wonderful reference

I had asked almost the same question Frigilux asked back when I first discovered this site. Robert was kind enough to answer then, now this helps complete the picture! Great idea to create a permanent collection. The early 60's with the 'clamshell' dashboards are still my favorites. Such classy-looking machines (but I've been told are real witches to service).

My 1-18 is photo worthy, but we have good pictures already. I do have something that might be of interest...

WIC owner's guide

Still have the washer (regular use) as it came with the house. So did these! Alas, the dryer had been replaced.

Here is my WC-6. From what I have been told it's a 1977 model. I have the matching DEC-5 dryer as well. Both Harvest Gold of course!

The 1-18 Tub Bottom Holes,, and the Turnover Factor

When we got our 1977 Frigidaire WC in Gold, it had the lowest holes as "captainmoody's", along the tub's curved bottom. Unfortunately, the tub was actually damaged with a noticeable chip on the middle-side. Frigidaire actually replaced the tub within 2 weeks of delivery, and it was the same tub as "pdub's".
I did'nt think it made any difference, because it alowed more water to drain from the bottom, better for sand and dirt to flush-out.
It IS TRUE that the 1-18 Jet-Cone Agitator tangled clothes less, and turnover was greater than the older 3-ring agitators, due to the greater anount of air being pumped into the washwater through the holes on the agitator under the gray rings. If I put my arm down into the washwater next to the agitator as it pumped, I could really feel the pull of the agitator's force. I also felt the air being shot into the water. The machine ran GREAT with NO repairs, for over 17 years!

I beleive there are holes under the tub ring that is near the top of the tub.

Centrifugal force pushes the water up and out!

IIRC models with a solid non-perforated tub tend to have an over-flow rinse to push floating "sediment", sand, lint and muck up and out.

If you look at thread 8047 -Thor, you can see the holes and the water leaving during spin and overflow rinsing. You have to look carefully. It's not a Frigidaire, of course, but the same principle is at work. If you have access to a Frigidaire, yank the agitator forward or sideways which will expose the rim of hundreds? of magical slits. It's a really cool thing to see, a true engineering stroke of genius.

I wonder if any member ever counted the slits. Sadly, I don't have a pulsator to yank, but my guess is 300 slits. Or maybe 500.

http://boyhood mystery: Where does the water go ?????

Thank you Peter, that only leaves the 1949 Unimatic (model: WL-60) as the missing from our pictures of GM Frigidaire tub/agitator styles.

1963/1964 Still Needed

The 1963 and 1964 "Sturdy" Frigidaire 12lb tub capacity and restyled three ring pulsator is missing still. Does anyone have pics for this particular washer? My mother had the 1963 Custom Deluxe washer WCDA-63 that was used for over 30 years before the outer tub developed a leak.

I have the missing link for the WCD63

I have this set sitting in my garage I haven't had a chance to post the pictures the last two months with my work travels as of latley I will have them up this weekend with the long story how I got them and they are mint shape and in "Copper"

Later

Thanks Glenn, its good to see your WO-65 has the original pulsator and agitator. The only thing that was changed was the lint chaser ring as it has a 1956-1957 gray ring. Glenn can you post a larger photo the inside of your WO-65?

Woops I did forget about the '63/'64 model picture, Brett I would so appreciate if you could load a nice large format picture of the inside of your washer here so I can make a nice album.

Deep Action Agitator

I thought that the solid tub Jet Action washers had the "Deep Action" Agitators and that the Perforated tub or 1-16's and 1-18's had the "Jet Cone" Agitator.Enqiring minds want to know.

HUM

I JUST THOUGHT THIS ONE WAS A JET CONE I THINK THE WASHER SAYS JET ACTION SO I DONT KNOW..HA HA IM NOT ALL THAT BRIGHT..WELL SOMETIMES I JUST LIKE PLAYING WITH THEM

Oh wow, I'm late getting onboard!

I'll start with my 1947 Unimatic. If you compare it to Robert's original you will see the original tub has been replaced with one from '51-'53. The pulsator is original.
