It could well be....though I would have thought that GE would have imported into Australia, but then we were renowned for having protectionist tarrifs right up until about 1985....

GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and other American brands used to manufacture appliances in Australia. They obviously mirrored US design and technology of the day, but modified them to Australian standards, tastes and wallets.

Having immigrated to Australia straight from the US, I always felt that Australian designed stuff was a dumbed down immitation of American products, but way more expensive. In them days the Australian dollar was also worth more than the greenback.

Rapunzel....

How do you figure that...expecially with frigidaire given they were still made by GM?

Whirlpool partnered with Malleys....

Hoover appeared to have used Maytag

Simpson just 'borrowed' from Speed Queen from a washer perspective...though they may have also paid to use the technology...and it is more than likely that they also did the same with Tappan/GE...

Our market was always expensive for a couple of reasons...

1) It is a small market...a smaller number of sales means higher prices; and
2) Import tarrifs stymied competition from overseas and protected the local manufacturers....basically, they could charge what the market was prepared to pay...AND they did.

...and a couple of examples of 'dumbed down immitation American products' would be appreciated to justify that comment...
