Not having any specific problems with AutomaticWasher, but have noticed some ungodly delays in general lately.
Along with the usual advice (you will find some very good suggestions in the FAQs section of Firefox, for instance), you might want to think about something like adblockplus or so.
This is not a problem at this site, but an increasing amount of traffic is going out of our browsers, back to the, shall we say, businessmen, who want to get to know us, all about us. You kill their requests from the beginning and lots of pages load much faster. Slate with addoubleclick blocked went from 40 seconds load (!) to much less than a second. Since those jerks only care about the young, dynamic US user, they shouldn't be pestering me anyway. Misdirecting is valuable not only in getting them off your DSL's back, but also in the corruption done to their data collection efforts. If we all work together, we can convince them that 80 year old grandmas are the only ones who really buy rap music anymore or the 35 year old male demographic really, really worries about his pantyhose.
I have also read - am not sure I believe it - that much bandwidth is lost to spam emails. My filters pick up several hundred a day so maybe there is some truth to it?
