Slow-Blow fuse - really?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My sister' 17+/- y.o. TOL Maytag has a fuse that was blowing regularly. When blown, it prevents the machine from filling up with water. I don't know what its funciton is. The machine was curbed due to its predilection to blow said fuse.

Dayum. Did I hit it on the nose again?

No no no hers was a very modern one I bought her circa 1992.

So reveal yourself Msiter. What gives? :-)

That has got to the be silliest reason to get rid of a machine. It could have been fixed by moving 2 wires. No parts needed. Well maybe some electric tape.

It had a lid switch and a check switch. If the check switch closed before the lid switch opened it would cause a short and blow the fuse. This would happen if the switch was ever so slightly out of adjustment. It was really a dumb idea, but those engineers.....

Photographic evidence #2 -

Crazy-strange sticker on a Maytag of all things! The only thing I can guess is that the 2 speed motor is not thermally protected and relies on the fuse to protect it. No other Maytag that I know of had a fuse, in fact I would have put limbs on the line and would have lost an arm or leg with a bet on the subject prior to seeing this machine!

My 1959 two speed Kelvinator has a similar set-up.

More to come in the new few days....

Wow, I have never seen that before! Actually, not much of anything looks familiar under the skirt of this old bird. Is this even a helical drive transmission or is it older style with the funky torque spring and t-key like AMPS's?

BTW, thanks for the pics!

You got that right! I was fuming angry! Especially since Brother-in-law is an electrician and it was fixable, IMHO.

*SIGH*

Washer and dryer booted to the curb. I could have cried.
