Small, but real heartbreak

I'm ok, my cat is ok, but....

Yesterday, I was making my carrot cake, and turned on the processor.

I did not shove my toaster back enough from the edge of the counter.

Sunbeam T-20B.

My parents recieved it as a wedding gift in 1956.

It fell not even three feet, into the wastebasket.

It no longer works. I am heartbroken.

Yes, I tried the outlet. I tried the toaster in another outlet.

I hate modern toasters. They all seem flimsy. I certainly cannot afford to get another Sunbeam T-20 from Ebay.

Is there a toaster repair place? Linkie?

I am really not well off, but I would rather pay to get this one fixed (if possible) than to get a new one. If that does not pan out, I'll hunt Goodwill and Sallyann....

Lawrence....details, details.. what exactly is not working with it? the elements, the auto toast elevator ???? I bought a second hand one once where the toast elevator didn't work properly so I just took it apart with a screwdriver, jostled things around in there, sprayed it with some WD40 and away she went like new.

Yes of course it's flammable, not as much as my passion but flammable none the less. Now back to reality, yes it is, but it's safe to use as long as you're not using it on open flames or things turned on heated up..doesn't leave enough residue to flame after use.

Pete-

I put a slice of bread into the slot marked "one slice.." the slot that turns it on. It won't turn on, it won't lower, it won't heat.

I fiddled with the dial. Nada.

I went to Sunbeam.com, and found a service centre about 8 miles from here. Going to call them tomorrow, but I have my doubts.

If I can find someone to fix it, I would be delighted. I am not at all comfortable about trying to fix it myself, even with it unplugged.

Toggle--I wasn't making (much) fun of your post above. "Bummer" is a perfectly valid response.

Good luck with the service centre. Whatever happens, DON'T throw it out. Someone here will be able to tell you of a repairer, or we can guide you through doing it yourself.
They are a special toaster but it's still not rocket science.

Is this the toaster that lowers itself when you put a slice in, without you having to press any buttons or levers? I have repaired these a couple of times though I don't remember it in any detail. The good news is that these toasters are designed to be repairable, unlike much modern junk. I think they were called TA-20 over here, and parts are still available new though the electrical stuff is 240 volt.

Yes, this is the big, heavy, roundish chrome self-lowering toaster.

I also hope that parts are available HERE, though in America's corporate culture, I have a certain amount of doubt.

I am keeping it, no matter what....It's a link to my past.

Lawrence,
Take the cover off,and find the points that trigger the self lowering part of the toaster. Simply adjust the points a bit closer. The jolt may have knocked the switch out of calibration. You can test the toaster without the cover in place.Just be very careful not to touch anything,while the toaster is plugging in. Good luck,these are a great toaster as it is. Would really be a crying shame to loose one that has a family history.

I called the repair shop

the woman on the phone was very nice...she said that they had a few nos parts, and that if I would bring it in, they'd take a try at it.

I think that's what I am going to do, though not until after Christmas.

Lawrence, I think I have an "extra" one of those toasters in a box somewhere ........ I like "rickr's" advice, if that doesn't work, let me know and you can have the extra one that I have.
