Reading another thread, someone asked what other hobbies we have, and thought it would be fun to share.
As for me, I'd collect pretty much anything, given the room! But I manage to limit my collections to toys of my youth (60s & early 70's), and defunct haircare products/drugstore items. Really, if you look at my bathrooms, they look like a Rexall threw up in there! I also collect old commercials. Oh, and catalogs. Hmmm. Old Consumer Reports, too.
As for non-collections, I love old TVs (I have two and I use them. Does that count as a collection?), old record players (Bobbyhall mentioned enjoying the smell of them and I couldn't agree more. I can still remember the smell inside our RCA Victor phono from like 40 years ago), and vintage countertop appliances. I'm working on doing my kitchen in a retro style. Lately, I've been getting into vacuum cleaners. I'm looking for a Sunbeam lightweight vac from the late 60s, but am having no luck.
I also like to read (former librarian, dontchaknow) and watch home renovation shows on TV.

How about youall?

Other Interests

Aside from appliances my other passion is Ocean Liners. And I must say I love both equally. I have amassed a nice little collection of books, videos, models, memorabilia, posters and the like over the years. I have also had the privilege of sailing on a few of these great ships such as SS Rembrandt(former Rotterdam),Queen Elizabeth 2, SS Norway(ex France) and the Queen Mary 2(maiden voyage). So as you can tell I like traveling too. Other hobbies also include reading, cooking, throwing parties, etc.

Cheerio,

Christopher

Things to Do

I enjoy baking, recently updated my KA to 5 qt, good for double batch of cookies, the officers I work with enjoy them!!
I have collected each color of the Sunbeam Mixmaster jr's, also 2 nice model 12's, chrome & white.
I finally have all the 50's and 60's Lux models, and after a LONG search, I found a Sunbeam Dual Deluxe as well as a 980 Eureka canister w/ vibra beat.
I too enjoy quilting, finished one last winter, probably get going w/ one for this winter. I use a Viking 1070 computer machine, works great.
Looking @ this site everyday is something that GREATLY enjoy!!!

Travel Trailers

Dennis and I used to really be into travel trailers, so much so that we have lived in various trailers. (talk about trailer trash!)
Our first trailer is the '53 Fleetwood in the picture-you can see me just off to the side washin' clothes with my Maytag Porta-Washer. We bought this trailer from a couple in Hastings, MN. I still remember how Mrs. had tears in her eyes as we pulled it away. The inside was the most beautiful wood paneling you ever saw-a quick swipe with Old English and it glowed! It even had an apartment sized Dixie range. The fact that there was no bathroom made things a little tough.
We then moved up to a '77 Ideal 26'. This seemed like the taj mahal on wheels. The ideal was the best built-best layout I ever saw. It was Ideal.
Also had a '62 Airstream. Thought Airstreams were the best til I had one. The rounded shape wastes too much space.
We've had our fill of trailer living-for now.
The picture was taken in the employee campground of Mesa Verde Nat'l Park-One of our Favorite places

jasonl: Automatic car washes? How cool...I used to love it when my Dad would take me along for the ride when I was about 5 or 6. As an adult, they became strictly functional to me, and I only run my truck through about every three months - if it's insanely dirty. When I saw your response, I realized I still do sort of like them when I go, especially the ones that are long with a lot of brushes and various "stations" in them. Some are very dramatic. I love how they clean my truck within about five minutes. However, they need to change the darn things to do a better job on side-view mirrors.

Tolivac's collecting

Like the first entry on this "Veg-O matic" I collect most anything.-I have a huge collection of DVD and laserdisc movies-and a few VHS ones. Also try to collect Video equipment "owners manuals"Have a collection of movie posters and banners. Some banners quite huge!I have my own 35MM projector(Holmes#8 portable)-several movie trailers-got many with the posters and banners.I love kitchen equipment-blenders ,mixers, and food processors. And of course vacuum cleaners. Try to specialize in Kirbys,Royals,Rainbows,TriStar-Compact.I also have a collection of guns.Even get to fire them on occasion.I also like organ music-esp "band" organ music.Have a large collection of Cinema Organ music.-Cd's and LP's.Collect LP's too.As with Drmitch-My movies are mostly Sci-Fi and horror-esp the 50's-60's shows.

Hmm...

I read (2-4 books a week, literary fiction, mysteries, cookbooks, biography, and poetry.)

(Laurie Colwin, Margaret Atwood, Sandra Scoppettone, Richard Stevenson, Jean Anderson, MFK Fisher, John Thorne, Blanche Wiesen Cook, A.Scott Berg, Anne Sexton, Maxine Kumin....)

I cook, when I feel like it. Living alone and cooking for just me is not much fun. I welcome potlucks at church for the opportunity to cook. I love using (playing with) my kitchen toys- a Cuisinart DLC-10E, and a KitchenAid K45SS. (A Hobart built K45!)

Music is a big interest/passion/need. Singer-songwriters mostly, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Tom Robinson, Leonard Cohen, Christine Lavin, John Eddie.....and SOME musicals. Not many. I am totally loving the cast recording of "Avenue Q."

I have collected insulators, salt cellars, and Blue Mountain Pottery from Canada. Right now, I'm not collecting much, but add a piece or two of new Fiesta every few months. Can't afford the vintage pieces!

Don't have room, or I'd have a kerjillion or two washers.

My wonder cat, LJ is my chief companion.

I have some other interests, but they are far from "PG-13," so I won't mention them here in detail.

I fly a few bandanna colors from the right side, and some from the left.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

My main interest is automatic washers of course, but I am also into vacuums and electric mixers. Older TVs are also quite cool, and I recently put a 1983 Zenith Space Command console in my room (picture below)! I also enjoy the "contemporary" furniture, and when we renovated my room in the summer of 2003, everything came from IKEA...YAY!

Seafood is my #1 favorite as far as heavy cooking is concerned (made Bacon Wrapped Barbecue Shrimp for Home Ec in 7th grade). I've baked from scratch before, but cake mixes reign supreme!

I am a big fan of Japanese gourmet, and regularly eat Sushi, Sashimi, & spring rolls...tasty!

trolleybus

Eddy1210-From the picture of your vehicle-does it run from the overhead cables like a tracked trolley?I have also heard the vehicles called "trackless Trolleys" I also like trains. The trolleybus sounds very cool.Would be quieter and less smelly then deisel buses.

And here's my cool 1980's GE "Touch Control" clock radio...snapped it up on eBay. This has such excellent sound that would put any modern clock radios in the trash bin--better than my Sharp minisystem on a few occasions! I would rather have the "Great Awakening" programmable, but that's much too expensive!

I have 9 cats (one of the females had a litter before she was spayed), so you can pretty much tell what my favorite animal is!

I am literally a music fan of all types. Old (Hank Williams) & new (Alan Jackson, George Strait) country like any Texan, 50's, 60's, 70's 80's, punk rock (Blink 182, Good Charlotte), Jazz (Boney James, Kenny G, Larry Carlton, & Wes Montgomery, etc...), you name it!

Hi tolivac!

Yes, Rex these are indeed trackless trolleys, we call them electric trolleybuses here, they run on the two overhead lines you see in the pic. It's 600V positive DC, and the other line is the negative. Although I don't own this one, this is my favorite that I get to drive occasionally.
I see we both enjoy organ music, although my tastes are more in the classical pipe organ sphere.
Eddy

trolleybuses and organs

Thats very interesting about the trolleybus.I wish some of the cities in the US would go to these instead of the deisel buses.Would cut back on noise and air pollution-Esp in downtown Wash DC where I used to work.I have classical pipe organ recordings as well. Also have some books on the organ.I am a memeber of the Pipe Organ Historical Society.Think they are based in Richmound Va.I haven't learned how to play-would be thrilling to play an organ though!!Truely the king of instruments.Always admired the Atlantic City Convention Center Auditorium Organ. Have two CD recordings of it.Searching for the LP's of it-esp "Bach on the Biggest"Have some books of this organ. It has the only 64' stops of any organ in the US that are playable. On the CD-it gives your woofer-subwoofer a workout!!At the low frequencies the pipe generates-it is almost impossible for microphones and speakers to reproduce it!What you hear on the recording is just part of its sounds.Mostly the Diaphone beater in the beater windbox. They say it actually shakes the buiding. The organ was built in 1929-1932 by the Midmer-Losh Co. of Long Island,New York. The building has a second organ-A Kimball Ballroom organ that is at present not playable. It is under restoration. Its a 55 rank Cinema style organ. The main organ is considered a cinema style as well-but it was designed for classical music too.

Rex and Eddy, I share your interest in Organ music, both classical and other styles like circus and theater. I love to listen to the big organs on Pipe Dreams every sunday night on our NPR station. Below is a pic of my Hamilton organ however I do not play.

Other Hobbies/Interests

After reading the treads everyday and hardly ever posting, I had to reply to this one. My other hobbies/collections beside my interest in washers is my 71 Ford convertible. I always had an interest in kitchen appliances too. I have outfitted the kitchen with all sorts of vintage appliances. The first being an early 1960’s GE electric knife, Bill loves it and thinks that it is the greatest thing. I slowly started to outfit the kitchen with all sorts of vintage tabletop appliances that we use everyday, none of the plastic stuff here. The collection consists of a Sunbeam double bubble vacuum pot, Oster 1 speed beehive blender, GE can opener, several toasters, how we got so many I haven’t a clue but we have 5 toasters, and one of the first early GE Toaster ovens with the warming drawer. The most recent finds that we got were a Sunbeam Mixmaster model 9 with the juicer attachment, and its companion the Sunbeam Mixmaster Junior complete with box and never used. I also have a small collection of electric fans 8 in total. They consist of a 17” Diehl 3 speed, 12” brass blade/cage 3 speed Century, 12” Westinghouse 2 speed, 15” GE Vortilux 3 speed, 12” Emerson with copper blades 1 speed, 12” Turquoise GE 1 speed, GE twin window fan 3 speed w/thermostat, and a Singer Ribbionair fan 2 speed fan. And least I shouldn't forget to mention the 4 vintage air conditioner I have aquired, 2 are what GE called the fashionair models - 1 from the mid 60’s and the other is a 1971 model. The other 1 is a GE carry cool and its sibling Hotpoint porta cool models. Those are some of my other interests guys, Have a good one!!

Doug

I have a GE clock-radio very similar to Westy's. Mine doesn't have any toggle switches on the panel, just touch pads. There is a AM/FM toggle on the right side, and a rotary volume control and tuner.

Other Collections

Oh, there are art deco water pitchers/teapots/coffee pots,
Blue mirrored tables from the 40's, O scale electric trains, wedding (Bride & groom)figurines, owls that overtake the living room, records 45's & lps, can't forget the matchbooks
and sheet music....

excellent thread!

In addition to the major appliances, I have a small collection of vacuums and other small apps & sewing machines. There aren't enough hours in the day/week/month/year, but I also enjoy some quilting & home sewing projects. I've started a "collection" of Heywood-Wakefield Airflow furniture for my bedroom, the first two pieces I bought from Robert's friend Gary in Minneapolis this spring. I'm looking for nightstands now and considering having a headboard made in the same design. This furniture is from 1937-38 and from what I've found out, quite rare as it has a "bleached" finish. Here's a pic of the furniture and another of the sewing area downstairs. (these are only three of many vintage cameras)

I have always loved old automobiles and have collected and sold them over the years, mostly Cadillac's, Lincoln's and a few choice BIG Buicks and Oldsmobiles. The main things I have collected since I was a child are Commercial Aviation artifacts. I have quite a few large aircraft models from different airlines dating back into the early '50's. A huge collection of aircraft/airline postcards dating back to the 1920's and all sorts of other airline stuff including timetables, playing cards, emergency evacuation charts, etc. I have en extensive library of many rare books and cockpit operating manuals for many extinct and rare aircraft. And then there are the old cookbooks-------!

Ganski:
My stepmom has a Bernina-Nice machine. She really likes it. My mom would LOVE to have one.I have 2 Bernina Vacuum cleaners in my collection.Like your sewing bench-looks like an edit suite that you would see video editing equipment put on.Those are common in TV stations and Video production facilities.Like the what looks like a plexiglas extension table on your sewing machine!-Great idea!I have a very old Huusquvarna (not sure of the spelling)that I got at a garage sale.It has various cams that determine the pattern it could sew.Think I will need to take it to work with me and blow out the fuzz with the station air compresser-Its not working so great right now-Probably needs a lube job as well. The movers mistook it as a radio-and my Zenith Trans-Oceanic radio as a sewing machine! Was funny-still have their tags somewhere.

record player smell

I too like the odor of those old record players. There is a Carosuel in the DC area(Glen-Echo) that has the exact same smell.Same as the Wurlitzer band organ that is with it.You really smell the odor (very pleasent)when you stand in front of the organ and listen after your ride!

For westytoploader

Dude, that is the absolute NEATEST bedroom I've ever seen! And you're what, nineteen? Does it always look like that, or did you straighten it up for the picture?
Man, makes me want to break out the Electrolux...
