some early spring cleaning and.............

It was actually warm today, compared to past weather so I decided clean out the garage floor after weeks of crud built up on it. Thanks to the liberal use of salt and cinders in my locale, the whole place smelled like ass and I decided I'd had enough. 

Managed to clean the Toyota-san, as far as the floor liners.  Added window washer fluid, kicked the tyres.  Left it outside for 2 hours with the winders open.........then it started to rain.

 

But, I also got really motivated and dug out my porcelain enamel gas and auto signs and put them up.  Most I have are Ande Rooney but I don't recall where I got the Sky Chief sign.

 

I've had all these since I lived in Indiana and all of them save for the Sky Chief have spent many years in the good old outdoors and are none the worse for wear.  I used to have a Pontiac sign, I think I let dad have it.  Gave a Phord sign to a friend that was a blue oval freak.

 

I'm going to add a few more, not much I might add due to not wanting to clutter the walls too much.  I'm now a Gulf oil freak, got a CC last year (we have a station down the road from me).   I also have an inflatable Gulf blimp that I need to hang up.  I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Gulf Neon clock and on the lookout for a porcelain enamel sign to add to my collection.

The hard thing is now, Ande Rooney switched to a different and cheaper manufacturing process and their signs are no longer the lustrous gems of old. I think too they are made in China now.

 

There's loads of cheap pressed tin signs but they simply don't look the part IMHO.

Great signs, Ben! The can of Texaco motor oil in photo #5 looked like a can of soup when I first glanced at it, LOL.

Your Profile Pic: I noticed a few weeks ago (when I walked around the north side of the building) that the new central A.C. units for the downstairs apartments are Goodmans. Don't see that brand often around here, but someone must carry it; either that or the landlord ordered online and installed them himself. Lennox and Trane are the big brands in this area.

Nice signs. There used to be a Texaco station about 3 miles from me, but not for many years. I've bought gas there more recently when in MS. The first one I come to on my way there is in Tupelo. They must not have any in this part of the country anymore. As for Gulf, they were gone for a long time, but there's been a station in Milford for the last couple years.

There's a lot of Goodmans in my area.  It is mixture of homes and rental properties although a recent Section 8 development went with Heil or Bryant, I can't recall. 

The Goodman has been "good" so far. No repairs or issues.  The furnace does the job and has kept me nice and warm.  I neglected to do a good cleaning on the outdoor unit last fall so I will tackle that this spring.

 

Finally, just pulled the trigger on the pic below. I need it like a hole in the head but I currently don't have a clock in my garage and since I'm a Gulf guy now, I figured what the hell............

 

Circlew I still have my Texaco gas card tucked away somewhere.  When I traveled all over for my company in the 90's there were Texaco stations all over the south.  Did they merge with Phillips or Chevron or someone?  Trying to figure out the downstream companies and brands from the original 7 sisters is like a needle in a haystack.  In fact, I don't know any Big Oil outfit that is 100 per cent integrated from drilling to refining all the way down to the local station.  I was surprised to learn that Gulf once billed itself using Pennsylvania crude, along with Quaker State, Pennzoil, and Kendall.  Amazing how PA was the cradle of the oil business yet now we think of Texas and Oklahoma as the oil states.

Forgot to add, Pure Oil started in my town in 1895.

I love petroliana...I have a big collection of old road maps. My grandfather went to work for Cities Service as a newly-minted PhD chemist in 1931 in Tulsa, OK and worked around the oil business for most of his career-my dad did petrochemical purchasing for most of his career.

Washman, I like your clock. As for Texaco, it is now part of Chevron.

For many years, there were 2 Pure stations within 5 blocks of my home. Later they became Union '76. One of them was a little white house with a blue tile roof, and was built sometime around 1940. Unfortunately, it was demolished about 15 years ago for a small park. The other one was in a building built around the same time, but that building that also housed a Chevrolet dealer. That one is now a body shop. The last time I bought Pure gas was in Hattiesburg, Mississippi about 6 years ago.

Purrs like a kitten and looks just like the ones for the lower level apartments. Mine is an old, old rusty Lennox, but it works. I always covered the unit for the winter back at the house. These are at the mercy of Minnesota's winters. That Gulf clock is a beauty.

When I was having the Manse redone my next door neighbor and HVAC company owner did his best to talk me into Goodman. He showed me his own home units. The Dr. on the outside of me went with three Goodman heatpumps. Me, take advice? I think not. I wanted Carrier and nothing but. They were disappointing the whole 17 yrs of ownership. HVAC guy said the equipment is very good but they sell through parts house and any idiot can buy one and become an instant Freon Pusher.

I've heard good and bad on Goodman. This being my first home, it is my first rodeo with Goodman.  So far, no complaints but to be honest, let me get back to you in a few more years. Then we'll see how reliable they really are ( or aren't).

The Mini-Manse came with an Amana Gas Pack (aka: Goodman). Two years in and the unit is at least 6 yrs old, zero issues. Plus it keep the house much more comfortable than the Carriers ever did.
