I use Pam or an equivalant spray .
The waffles stick and split from not having the waffler hot enough when you pour in the batter, and not cooking them long enough, Minimum 4 minutes, less causes the splits especially when you just have to peek.. NO PEEKING.

It's also required that oil be IN the batter in addition to greasing the grids. Every batter recipe will say this. Actually, it's the only thing that distinguishes it from pancake batter.
