When I was a kid in the 50's I was glued to television in the hopes of seeing a mixer or a washing machine. Just seeing them was a thrill but money shots were visually orgasmic. Thank you for a moment's respite filled with pleasurable tunes and machines.
I was being a little tongue-in-cheek and playing with words. The Galamatic Delux washer ad features a 'golliwog' (the little black fella dancing around in the washer), in case you missed him.
On its own 'golly' is used as an exclamation of mild surprise and 'wog' is usually in reference to someone who is not anglo but of darker (Mediterranean) complexion. The closest in US slang would be a 'guido'. 'Wog' can also refer to the flu. So, if you say to an Australian that you've caught a 'wog', to us that means you've got a cold or flu.
I have one of the 1092 model Whirlpool pushbutton machines, its great to see the ad in such good quality.
A Gollywogg is what you'd call the Black and white teddy bear in the washing machine.
I've put a link to the article as to what a Wog is. Traditionally in Australia it was used to describe a bug, or being sick, IE I've got that wog thats been going around. These days, its either derogatory or affectionately used to describe a Mediterranean person, it just all depends on the situation and context.
Its amazing how we all speak the same language, but the subtle differences.
thanks-now I know-yes I saw the little charactor dancing around and in the washer-now I have the connection.And--I got my "Wog"shot--Flu shot?I like that pushbutton WP washer-very cool.As I have pointed out on this site-older machines such as that are as rare as hens teeth in my area-since there are no basements or simalar storage for old machines-the old one gets hauled away-and often to the dump.so you don't see classic older machines such as that pushbutton WP or KN.At best you might find one as a corroded hulk of metal in a barn.the humidity and swampiness here kills machines.I get the impression Australia is quite dry-so machines would survive better there.I just keep looking at the swap shops here and leave them with my phone# in case they run into any classic older machines-washers,vacuum cleaners, and such.
No basements in Oz either and we call them flu shots
Old stuff gets put out for curbside collection mostly. Some stuff ends up in sheds, back rooms and garages, but it's very rare.
The climate in Australia is variable. If you live close to the sea there is the added problem with salt corrosion and the height of summer brings elevated humidity and monsoonal conditions to many parts of the country.
If you went to a GP over here and asked for a wog-shot, you'd probably get strange looks. I don't think that they would make the connection and probably regard you as weird. To say that you've caught a wog is interpreted very differently to 'can I have a wog shot'. That may actually be construed as a request for racially motivated violence.
I've never heard of the Healing-Thormatic washer in Post #7 (and the Super Searchalator) doesn't have any knowledge of it, either). Was this a version of an American Thor design? Does anyone know?
It is possible that this design was also used for for the 1960s Parnall designs, which were based (according to the Which 1960 report) on the Thor Automagic. It does not look like the semi-automatic version to me but it could have been the fully automatic automatic version.
Of course there is no saying that the machine would look identical antway - you only need to look at the Galamatic for that - although clearly based on the Hotpoint Supermatic (and might even have been manufactured here by Hotpoint) the contols are like no supermatic seen here. And there are similarities in the advertising too, as can be seen in the link - from about 35 seconds in - but dont miss them - they are great fun
That both the hotpoint supermatic and the galamatic adverts had the same background music, the `hotpoint washes extra clean, cleaner than you've ever seen' jingle.
Strange agitator in that Thor washer-looks more like something you would see in a dough kneader for a pizza place.
It seems like the "Wog" is pretty specific as to what is meant. So flu shot in Austalia is just that--flu shot.so Austalia can get humid-esp on the Coast-much like out my way.so,machines can have a hard time surviving there, too.Just keep looking.
I had totally forgotten that Healing had updated the look of the escutheon before the company met its demise. The picture is the semi automatic, where did you find it? The wash action was known as "surgent" the equivalent to the "power surge" thor/bendix here in the US. There is a picture of the day that shows the original "Tri-matic" by Healing. It has not come up for a long time. Anyway, what is the machine to the right of the Thor? Is it an early version of the Thor semi-automatic? We would love to see what else you have in the lineup in that shed or storage locker. Thanks for the videos, one day a Malleys 12 will show up I'm sure.
I am not sure if the Turner was rebadged as Stampco or visa versa for a while or if if they were completely different machines. Quite a stash you have there....any photos of escutcheons and the money shot would be appreciated
