Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Hi Jimmy
That is awesome!!! I really enjoyed reading that article and hope your mom is very happy in her new (old) home. So cool how you and Dave restored the house to how it was in the 50's. What kind of washer and dryer was originally in the house? How about now? Did you put something vintage in the basement??
Thanks for sharing!
Rich

Hi Rich, glad you enjoyed the article. When my parents first moved in the house in 1950 all my Mom had was an Apex wringer washer and hung her clothes outside in the summer and in the basement in the winter. In 1956 she purchased a GE FilterFlo washer, WA755N, which was the top of the line model with suds-saver, WHICH I SAVED AND STILL HAVE! She didnt have a dryer for the next couple of years, finally getting a BOL Norge gas dryer in 1958 from the newly opened appliance store in Ohio: Home Centers. Frankly, I thought about putting the original GE washer back in the house, but honestly she didnt want to use an old washer!. I had gotten her a TOL Whirlpool set, all touch contols on both washer and dryer which she likes a lot, so those got moved in. She really does not do much laundry, and I really didnt want to part with my 1956 GE FilterFlo!

VERY cool indeed. I know all of the effort put into the project definitely paid off in the end, and that's great that the house is back in the family again. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the note Jeff. You might be pleased to know that my Mom had a 1948 AirWay Sanitizor when she first moved in. We had that for many years, and YES I STILL HAVE IT!!! I redid the hose and moved it back in! It still works like a charm, very quiet and powerful and great for the hardwood floors that are still in the house. When my mom got new carpet in 1959, she went to the local dept store: Oneils, and bought a turquoise Hoover Convertable Special for $79.95. I was with her when she bought it and I loved it and played with it all the time. Thru a lot of hard use and abuse it got tossed in the late 60's. My wonderful friend and Hoover guy Tom Anderston gave me one EXACTLY like the one my mom had, and its in the house now! A special thanks to Tom for doing such a generous thing to help us make the house as retro as we could........I use the Hoover all the time there!

that is SO amazing
kudos to you
incidentally is that the same firestone
as the firestone high school
that chrissie hynde of the pretenders
attended in the sixties

again, what a great story

That is a wonderful article and a wonderful thing for you both to do for your mom. Our mom downsized into a simpler one floor house quite a while back now and at the time we were sort of shocked but now that she's in her 80's it's turned into a blessing and hopefully she can stay as long as possible, that's her plan, cause she doesn't want to go condo either like your mom.

Airway + Hoover Convertible

That makes for a clean house.

Thats really awesome that you could do that Jimmy. Any chance of seeing more pictures of the restored house?

Jimmy, you should indeed be proud!

I seem to remember you mentioning this some time ago. My parents both still live in the house where I grew up. Similar time frame, they moved in Jan of '51 with my 3 older brothers. I came along the next summer in '52. My aunt and uncle lived in Firestone Park in the later 50's and early 60's until they moved to Columbus, but I don't remember the address. I'll have to ask my aunt next time I see her.

I'm curious, are there any of the old neighbors left? My parents are 1 of 3 original families on their street.

Great story! Congrats!
Bill

great mention in the paper and congratulations on all the hard work and achieving what you wanted enjoy many more years with the home :P

Yes Jeff, I can try and get some more pics of the restoration. The actual newpaper article had about 7 photos in it but for some strange reason the Beacon Journal only put one photo on the web link. Never in a million years did I ever think I would be moving many of our items BACK into the house 36yrs later. It was a thrill to put the Airway back in the same closet where it had been all thru my childhood and also the Hoover that Tom gave me. Actually we had many of the original items from the house such as lamps, tables, wall art, clocks, my fathers golf and bowling trophies, etc. I put most everything back in its original place to make it as much like home as I could........We will be relandscaping the house back to its original look this spring. The dogwood tree that I planted in the side yard when I was 8yo is still there, the crack in the back wall of the garage where my mom drove thru it with our 1955 Ford still exists too!. Lets hope that does not happen again!...........

Home sweet home

That is so cool Jimmy! What a wonderful story. Congratulations on this large project! Please do share more photos with us when you are able.

Jimmy, this is nothing short of amazing. Congratulations on a job well done. And what fun that you still had so many of the original items and could see so many things you remembered after all those years.

Jimmy, what an undertaking, congratulations on a job well done!

The article also mentions (several times) finding carpet that closely matched the original. Just what is this new carpeting? What does it look like? I may be in the market myself and would love to know- Cory

Wow Jimmy - cheers to you and your brothers efforts to bring mom back home. The story was very touching - amazing how some of the small things, like the scribbling and the marks on the basement floor, still remained after all these years. I hope you mom enjoys her new home!

Ben
