check out some of these white noise CD's designed to soothe babies to sleep....I think I can enjoy them myself! They have all sorts of appliance sounds on them like air conditioners, fans, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, and yes even washers and dryers! My favorite, although non-appliance, I think has to be the distant thunderstorm

... While we enjoy the sounds of our machines humming away for us, I never thought they would be recorded to a CD and marketed!

O Yes! I'll Never Forget!

When our family shared a house with the neighbors, my room was in the basement. As a celler dweller, the Maytag A806 type washer was on the other end of the basement floor. Every time somebody needed to run the washer, I always wanted to take a nap, even when I had homework to do. The irony was the machine vibrated a lot during the spin cycle, only due to the fact that the washer was not sitting on a completely level surface. I figured this out one day by holding down the machine. As long as I was holding the machine in place, it spun so quietly that the neighbors thought the machine was broken. LOL! Then, of course, there were other times *in my childhood* when either a dishwasher or a washer were such sootheing sources for causing me to fall asleep.--Laundry Shark

The dryer sounds like a Frigidaire. I'm not sure what the DW is.

I would definitely get the Fan, Air Conditioner, DW, Washer and Dryer

I can't sleep in total silence,if the power goes off I wake up,my favorite is the window a/c and the fan,It was cold for a few days so I had both turned off, just the TV on,the other night I had just the fan on and I slept through the alarm. The washer is a different story, when I bought the house I had a Roper washer and the laundry room is next to my bedroom and I said no doing laundry while I'm sleeping, all those direct drive noises,Thunka Thunka Thunka, then in the spin cycle it shook all over the place,I replaced it with a Dependable Care Maytag from the 90's,the last of the real Maytags and the laundry room is quiet again. I grew up with window a/cs so MUST have some background "white noise" to sleep. Ceiling fan on high is sufficient for summertime until the weather changes enough that it causes too much chill. Then I use either the central blower running continuously, or a small circulating fan, or a space heater if justified. Radio or TV doesn't work for me.

As for appliance sounds, I used to record the 1962 Whirly (JCPenny cassette recorder, microphone dangling down behind it), and later the KDI-17a, and fall asleep listening to them.

I'm an erratic sleeper at the best of times and my doctor has suggested a blacked-out, silent bedroom. But the TV is usually on all night. I run it through a sound system, so I can turn the picture off but still have sound through the stereo. I like it. It feels too desolate when it's absolutely quiet. But it probably does tend to wake me up often during the night.

And to Help Me to Relax and Pass the Time...

I have all these demo sounds of washers, dishwashers, and related commercials to listen to. I am always open to collecting even more.--Laundry Shark

Maybe I should have put this on the KA mixer thread-but the sound of an older-Hobart-KA mixer and Sunbeam mixer was sort of soothing--to the taste buds! Also I sleep with a fan going-was from when I lived in an apartment to cover the other sounds-now that I live in a house still need the fan-it covers the neighbors dogs-and when I slept at someone elses house requested a fan.Guess I got addicted to the fan sound!
