Speaking of Kenmores.... Year of this 70?

Hey Guys! Good to see you all again : )

I'm afraid I drug home a Kenmore this time, a make I know very little about. Can anyone give me any pointers on the year, where it fit in the lineup and any other interesting trivia tidbits?

Here's a shot taken in the dark, pretty much as found up North.

What's up with the Filter indicator? How exactly does that feature work?

And the filthy, filthy tub! Looks like I need a cap for that agitator. I have a sneaking suspicion it may need a new motor, but how can one turn down Turquoise? Cory

My grandpa had this exact machine in white many many years ago, WAY before I was born. I have a picture of my uncle standing in it as an infant. I remember when I was really little wondering what agitator that machine had and what brand it was. If I'm gonna get a Kenmore, I'd like to get this model.

This is a great find for you and everyone. What the Filtering Light means, someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but it is for either the very first year or thereabouts of the Self-Cleaning Filter System. The Filtering Light glows when the Washer is either Washing or Rinsing, letting you know that the Filter is Filtering the Lint out of the Laundry.

That particular year Model is a MOL Kenmore. The Agitator Cap would probably be one of them that does cover over the sides of the top part of the Agitator and it would have the "K" on the top of the Cap, indicating obviously Kenmore.

Good Luck with this great Washer, I hope that you are able to save it and get it operating like new again real soon.

Hi Cory, nice colour! If the model # is still on the machine, it should read 110.0000000 The first two digits after the "110." are usually the model year on the older Kenmores. I would guess this is a 1961, or 1962 model.

That's a 1963 model, I grew up with this model in coppertone with the matching dryer. The agitator cap was the scrubbing version made of rubber with little nubs to pretreat clothing. It also came with a measuring cup that you stored on the agitator post. This was a great machine with a long stroke and a delicate cycle that was gentler than even many of today's front loaders. Yes, the "filter" light came on during wash and spin. I believe it was third in the line up of the year. Hope this helps, Todd

...this is a 1963 model. The filtering light comes on whenever the wash solenoid is activated.

The Lady Kenmo' is right - 1963. This is the same one that I found last fall and is now residing with Steve in Atlanta. It had the scrubber cap with measuring cup... I think I may have another of these, Cory if you need one. I also think I still have a 63 Lady Kenmore control panel too if that is of interest - you could pimp up that turquoise a bit! Check the top of the agitator carefully for hairline cracks in the bakelite, it will shatter with a heavy load - my straight vane in the 51 Kenmore shattered the other night - tragedy, yes, but I'll donate it to Mark Goodall from the vac club so hopefully it can live on as a piece of art!

Here is a shot of my '63 Kenmore dryer typical of the type that it might have been paired with from the store.

And guess what... I'm going to refinish this dryer in turquoise--just like your washer.

The washer & dryer in this thread could be two different models (a 70 washer and 600 or 60 dryer) or could be two different production years. Notice the difference ihn colors on the timer dials and the background of the auxilliary knobs obn either side.

Where is the start button on the dryer? Didn't Kenmores of this era have it at the bottom of the timer dial?

70 Series

This model I remember was just as neat as LK, but the 70 the ovals around the dials had a back light, the 600 all of same year 63 did not.

This model 70 was made from 1962 to at least 1965

This was the washer my mom bought when she and dad moved into their new house as newlyweds in 1963....they also got the matching Soft Heat dryer. The washer survived until 1989 at our lake house so I vividly remember this washer. I have the 1963 Summer catalog and they show it as only being available in white. I have seen an magazine ad from 1964 that shows the machine in Coppertone. I have also seen this model offered in a 1965 catalog as well..I think it was a Spring 1965 catalog and in that catalog it said this model was available in Coppertone and Turqouise. As for the filter light Steve was right....all that did was glow whenever the washer was agitating to let you know that the filter was filtering. Kenmore/Whirlpool used the filter light until at least 1967. FYI: The filter has little "pebbles" in it as the filter medium and if memory serves they make a swooshing sound during the wash and rinse cycle, BUT if the machine has not been used for a while and enough time has elapsed for the water left in the filter to evaporate the pebbles get brittle and disintergrate with age. My grandma's washer was more like that 600. It's on my dream list but not as high priority as a 68-70 Kenmore 800.

Thanks for the great words guys- Following Rick's tip I checked the tag, and sure as the great minds of this board have revealed, it is indeed a '63. Ben is stopping by tonight and we'll haul it downstairs for a closer examination.

BTW, this machine came from the same northwoods recycle center as the damaged-beyond-rescue turquoise Rapidry Fridgidaire I spotted there last year.

Handily, I managed to save the below panel too, to match the washer panel we parted off a rustry SQ. Ha, mechanical timer! : )

Good luck on getting her up and running; after working on a BD Whirlpool/Kenmore you can tackle anything (I myself haven't gotten past that hurdle yet, LOL)! And if the base/mechanism is too far gone, you can always save the top panel and make a Frankenmore!
