I have acquired a HooverMatic twin tub. I have posted some photos of it on here bu I have been told by my Mum that Twin Tubs use different type of washing powder. Is this true?

You can buy handwash and twintub powder from the supermarket its very sudsy so takes more rinsing but if you want a rich lather go get a box Persil twintub from Morrisons or Ariel handwash/twintub from Sainsburys or Daz is available from Morrisons and Tesco.
I have found that the Biological powder from Aldi to be the best performer it also rinses out well and I think with Hoovers making more suds than others you may want to get some Automatic powder

Austin is totally right.
You can use any powders, you can use handwash powders too (things that is not reccomended for front loaders), I always used the italian handwash powders in agitator washers but also front loader powder too.
A nice powder is Formil handwash from Lidl marseille scented, do you have it in UK? Otherwise I think you should have Ariel over there...

Since They Aren't Front Loaders
Twin tub washers like American top loading units with central beaters aren't bothered by froth. Therefore you can use high sudsing detergents or soaps no problem in theory. However in practice one finds low sudsing "HE" detergents made for front loaders rinse eaiser and faster when using my Hoover TT. There is only so much noise one can stand and time spent with hands in hot water, so the sooner rinsing is over with and faster wash day is done the better.
Easier and faster rinses will be what you'll want if using spin can as the primary means doing that part of washing. Too much froth not only slows down things but can harm the pump and or motor if allowed to go on too long.
Being as all this may however, if you want to use pure soap flakes such as LUX, then all bets are off regarding froth.

Whatever became of Persil Automatic? My mother for many years had Hoover twin tubs and bought the non automatic version of Persil. I see they still do a handwash powder but the word "Automatic" has been dropped as that is now the default.

I recomend for twin tub washers...
The ariel non-biological detergent and the persil non-bicological, because the ariel handwash detergent is similar than the non-biological. In my jata twin tub washer I use some automatic detegents and it wash very well .But if you want to use the handwash detergent don´t use a lot becose if you put a lot it probaly the washer do a lot of suds.

Here's the UK equivalent Ariel which I have used in my Hoovermatic. I'm not keen on using it for colours as I feel it is not as gentle as other detergents but that's just my personal view. It can be a bugger to rinse out though so use sparingly
