Speed Queen Dishwasher?

Hello all,
I was on the highway today, and saw a scrap person's truck with tons of stuff on it.
I said to myself, wow there is a neat avocado colored portable dishwasher with a very nice chopping block. (the dishwasher was facing me) When I got closer to the truck, I could not get over the fact that the brand, in huge type set was Speed Queen. It did not have a knob for the timer, but appeared to have a rapid advance timer on the right, with buttons to press for your wash selection on the left.
Did Speed Queen have their name on a dishwasher at some point in history? If so, who made the dishwasher?
I had to meet someone for a appointment, so I could not follow the fellow to find out more.

Brent, it was most likely one made by D&M. About this same time in that era, there was an apartment complex in austin that was new (gotld & avocado) and it had Norge appliances, D&M dishwasher sourced.

Speed Queen Dishwasher!

Many years ago about 32 to be exact I remember seeing a speed queen dishwasher model in a local appliance store in Teaneck New Jersey. It was most deffinatly D&M. It was a nice machine with a dial and about 4 pushbuttons. I wish I could see the complete model list they had at the time.
The washing machines in the store that were speed queen were solid tubs with leather consoles.

I saw one once too.
Never realized Speed Queen made dishwashers.
I can't remember seeing a timer, but I remember the buttons were round and slender,4 or 6.
It was a white built in. I saw it 8 years ago

Thinking about it more, the door was white, the console was stainless and the word Speed Queed was in big red lettering

The SQ dishwashers were identical to the Modern Maid and Kenmore models made by DM who is now owned by Electrolux.Modern Maid was known best by their "range that washes dishes"They made a gas or electric appliance designed similar to a free standing double oven range but the area where the full size lower oven would normaly be had the full size dishwasher instead.Great idea but the oven was small and not that dependable.They were expensive and not long after Raytheon's purchase of McGraw/Edison's appliance division around 1975,they dissapeared.They continued on with dishwashers under Amana,Speed Queen,Modern Maid and Caloric as well as gas and electric cooking products for Modern Made,Amana,and Caloric.Then around 1987,Raytheon decided to sell out all their appliance companies to go governmental and sold them all to Goodman a huge heating and a/c corporation.Goodman left Speed Queen Modern Maid and Caloric on the table.Then sold the domestic appliance divisions to Maytag not long after Maytag aquired JennAir.This was where it got a little hairy.Amana washers and dryers being a sister company of Speed Queen,were made in the same plant.Speed Queen had become owned by Alliance,a commercial laundry supplier.Alliance made an agreement to allow Amana to use their products and kept their own available only for commercial use.Amana briefly introduced a front loading washer around 1996 but it was a major failier and had many flaws.It was recalled and never to be seen again.
Now that all of Maytag and their subsidiaries are owned by Whirlpool,Speed Queen makes a full line of laundry products for the home with a strong 3 year parts and labor warranty and Amana now has a front loading washer with matching dryer(made by Samsung)for unbelievable low prices ($599/washer & $549/dryer)that are available at Home Depot.

Dishwashing Range

There was a range/dishwasher combo sold under the Speed Queen label, also. I have a picture saved, but am not at home right now to post it.

I have repair & parts manuals for SQ dishwashers. Early 70's.

Interestingly enough, Speed Queen had a line of refrigeration in the early 1930's although I've never been able to determine if they were made by SQ themselves or sourced. Very beautiful units.

Brian's description sounds a lot like the looks of this one. It had about 6 or 7 buttons on the left hand side, roundish, and a quite large stainless front panel for the controls housing. The lettering was huge for "Speed Queen" however it was green and not red in color. There was not a dial on the right hand side. That is what I can't figure out. If it was a rapid advance timer, that confuses me.
Didn't D&M make a rapid advance timer for the Lady Kenmore dishwashers at some point?
I would have followed the guy but I had to meet up with someone.
The dishwasher did appear to be in great shape. The chopping board was very thick, and nice wood.

Modern Maid

Just after hearing about the modern maid, I just thought about it too.I was painting for a lady and was going to pull the stove out to paint behind it.She said "You can't, its plumbed to the sink"Couldn't figure out what she ment till she showed me the dishwasher was where the oven was.It was pretty cool looking, and big. It was all black and chrome. I took a peek in the dishwasher.It had a very small silverware basket, about half the size of a Kitchen Aid and the racks were very basic.It only had one spray arm in the bottom.Were these combos not shown on The Price As Right?Made by Tappan?

No.The ones seen on TPIR were Modern Maid.Let's Make a Deal gave a lot of them away when they were with McGraw Edison.I faithfully watched both Monty Hall and Bob Barker for decades just to drewel over the appliances they'd give away.LMAD gave lots of Speed Queen washers and dryers away as well as complete FRIGIDAIRE kitchen appliance sets in Harvest gold and/or poppy red.They (LMAD)also gave away a lot of Modern Maid range/dishwashers.MM made 3 different models from $1399 to $1999.They also made seperate units to add or replace to older sets.I remember a neighbor who had a FRIGIDAIRE Flair range and instead of a cabinet underneath,they placed a Modern maid dishwasher.

For some reason I'm thinking there was also an exhaust hood that slid out over the burners on the modern maid?
Would this be right?
Or was it in the slanted part that held the oven to the back of the stove?

years ago we owned a condo in Northern VA that had a MM Oven/DW combo. Both worked great but there was no sound insulation on the DW; it was LOUD but cleaned v. well with proper placement of dishes, glassware... Last time we visited some of the condos still had them going strong.

I'm not surprised.The one I know about needed to be overhauled because mice had nested in its insolation and smelled gross.

This thread makes me wonder. Was the stove 24" wide or was the dishwasher 30" wide?

I remember a game show on NBC called Sale of the Centuary. Some times they would have compact kitchen or effiency kitchens and the range/dishwasher combo would be one of the items, along with a Westinghouse Front loader and stacking dryer A.K.A. a stack pack. The M.C. was Joe Gargiola. Early to mid 70's era. This is what I remember. Danf.

Aint that somethin huh.....I remember on the Price is Right that they had a Speed Queen dishwasher and that was the only time I saw one. Looks like D&M had built this...so its not something special...except the name.

I have slides of this unit

When I teach the range and oven lactures, I have a slide set of the different type of configurations (free standing, slide in, built-in, high-low, etc.) and this model is in the slide set, but with the Caloric badge. You could also just get the cooktop and oven and the unit would sit on the base cabinet.

Speaking of space-savers here is a cooktop and oven that sits atop a coutnertop(workbench). in this case it is over a couter-height undercouter refrigearator.

It appears to me to be a Royal-Rose brand cooker from the 1920's or earlier. This BTW, is located in a very swanky portion of Manhattan on a well-known avenue. (NYC rent reguations make the rent of this aparttment FAR FAR FAR FAR below market value.

The remodeled version. A cheap 20" (50cm) stove is "dressed up" with a one-piece stainless-steel coutertop. Holes made for element ("burner") wells. Refrigerator is still an undercoutner model.

Q: How can one tell that Manahttanites are not expected to cook?

A: There is 20a circuit-protection for an appliance that requires at least 40a!

Fairly typical Manhattan kitchen.
Probably not even 6 feet wide (1.8m)
