Regarding the destroyed blanket, I had something similar happen in a whirlpool VMW top load washer several years ago, although the blanket in question wasn't the foamy fuzzy type you guys are referring to -- I'm not sure I've ever seen one of those. Mine had this braided textured pile on one side and I'm not sure if the ridged fabric pulled way from the rest of the blanket during the wash or what but the pieces were all over the bottom of the washer tub. Took me ages to get it cleaned up and the blanket was just gone. As in this case, one day the blanket was fine and then it just...fell apart all at once. Very strange.

Forgot to post a picture of my 14 year old Zanussi's door seal.

Water gets trapped at the bottom because there is no drain hole, so I've got a bit of a limescale problem, and the rubber had not aged well.

I do leave the door open as well as the draw, and it will also get cleaned in the wash by peracetic acid from the powder detergent.

Also posted a couple of pictures I found showing the state of the tub and spider from when I opened it to replace the bearings a few years ago (the brown stains on the tub are from rusty grease from the bearings that I wiped off my hand on the limescale). There's plenty of nooks and crannies for crud to collect in my machine.
