I just loaded into the Ephemera Library the 32 page 1959 Speed Queen Facts of Superiority Book. It is just filled with beautiful images of Speed Queen washer parts and lots of great information about why Speed Queen was better. There is a great comparison of the Speed Queen design to both the Whirlpool/Kenmore and GE Filter-Flo designs. I highly recommended this one if nothing else just for the adorable graphics alone!

I wonder how it drains the water from the tub with a "No Spin Switch for Drip-Dry Garments"?

And... does the user have to fish around in the water to collect those drip-dry garments?

I was wondering the same thing. I had a '60's model A-49, according to thread # 2059 and it didn't have this feature. Maybe it's a very slow, short spin, but that's not what the panel says. Anyone know?

I love the references to Sewerage in relation to the recirculation of water from the Whirlpool and GE. That's highlighted by the Smelly Whirlpool :)

Funnily enough though, there is no mention of needing to clean the Speed Queen filter, just that it exists :)

Jon-- I picked this one up too, and it's awesome! On recirculating sewage: That elicited a chuckle from me, as well. The clothes are washing in the same water; what's the harm in recirculating it to filter out lint?

Having access to these vintage gems is really a treat.

Full confession: When I was a kid, I used to steal washer and dryer manuals from neighbors and my parents' friends. How awful is that?! Had quite a collection by the time I was a teenager. This is one of several reasons I have a lot of karmic reparation to work through before I kick off, LOL.

I know...I was quite the operator back in the day.  Used to steal manuals from machines in stores, too.  Had a smooth technique, if I may say so, myself.  Fortunately, my conscience prevailed before anything led to reform school.  Can you imagine explaining that rap to a room full of street toughs? "What are you in for?"  "Stealing appliance manuals."  My dance card would have been full 24/7, LOL.

Eugene for shame!

Explaining to reform toughs reminds me of the time we were in Aberdeen picking the washer farm. That night  eating at the "Heffer Trough", where they weighed you going in and out and calculated your bill,- We were all gathered around eating when this big Heffer came over and said to the table
"You boys in town for the huntin"? To which Robert replied ( in seconds I might add ) - "Yes, we're hunting washing machines" Which left the Heffer completely speechless and dazed, he turned slowly and ambled back to the feeding trough !!

No one outside applianceville gets it LOL !

There was a group of enthusiasts gathered to discuss and celebrate their mutual interest.  A visit to Sears was involved to examine a then new-on-the-market product.  One of the group expressed a desire to obtain a copy of the product's user guide for a thorough recounting and memorization of the operating routine and options.  Thus, another member of the group obliged by swiping the documentation from the display model ... unbeknownst to the target recipient until the group had exited the store and was in their vehicle back to headquarters ... at which point everyone had a nice case of the vapors!
