Some time ago, I found Todd (Washerlover) a Speed Queen set at a local Goodwill. Months later he finally found the time to hook her up and see what she does. The only problem is when you add bleach to the dispenser, it all leaks onto the ground. But not a water leak in sight, and all kinds of interesting noises! Even the console light worked. Gotta love that overflow rinse! One of the parts on the inside had a date of 1966 on it. The matching dryer has yet to be tested.

Speed Queens are so much fun. Brings back memories of my aunt's machine, not quite as deluxe, I think a 1968 or 1969 model.

The knobs are for:

Wash Temp -- Hot, Warm, Cold
Rinse Temp -- Warm, Cold
Agitate -- Brisk, Gentle
Spin -- Fast, Slow

coffee SQ's

Great find! water efficient too with that solid tub but how reliable is a timed fill? Do these machines have a restrictive water pressure regulator to compensate for different plumbing systems?

looks great

Speed Queen Clean

EXCELLENT FIND!!! One of my favorite machines...of course who wouldn't appreciate a machine that goes "BANG!" as it starts agitating as well as when it shifts into spin!

They have excellent water action as well...nothing makes waves like an SQ in my opinion!

"Do these machines have a restrictive water pressure regulator to compensate for different plumbing systems?"

Timed fill machines have a rubber flow washer inside the water valve that came in various sizes and could be changed according to your water pressure requirements.

SQ also has the "Extra Fill" marking on the normal cycle for low-pressure situations. I remember accidentally hitting that spot once at my aunt's and panicking when the basket started overflowing -- didn't fully understand about solid-tub machines at that age ... although I should have because I knew it had the overflow rinse.

Dating the S.Q.

Are you sure its a 66 model? The reason I ask is I remember the control panel as that of the 70's sires. As my Great Aunt Meriam had a washer just like it and she didn't get her's until sometime in the mid 70's around the time I had graduated from High School in 1975. The 1966 part might have been interchangable with the 70's sires. My Great Aunt's S.Q. was Coppertone and my Aunt Hazel had it in White.

Oh yeah, theres a flow-restrictor all right-------------

One of the first vintage machines I collected was a 1968 SQ. Due to the old plumbing in my nearly 100 year old house, my water pressure is somewhat low. When set to "extra fill" the tub JUST did fill up for the wash, but only made it about half way for the rinse. So I took the water valve apart and removed the tiny flow restrictor. From that point on the machine worked great----although I did waste some water on the wash fill.

Severl months later, a friend nearby, who greatly admired the machine bought it from me. He has GREAT water pressure. Well, when we started her up the water FLEW in!!!!! It came in so fast it actually backed up in the flume!!!!! When set at the low setting the tub filled up and overflowed just before agitation began! Oh, and talk about an overflow rinse-----it must have changed the water in that tub three times over for the rinse cycle!!!! A VERY through rinse indeed!

Needless to say we had to back off the water valves at the faucet. I offered to go get another flow restrictor to put back in the water valve but my friend would have none of that-----he loves the overflow capability.

Anyway, it was a good learning expierence for me as far as the importance of flow-restrictors are concerned. Recently I removed them from my 1968 "Gold Crown" "Roller-matic" and it sure did make a difference in how well it filled up.(Timed fill machines can be a real pain if you have low pressure!) Just like the SQ before it, it fills right up to the top for the wash and almost to the top for the rinse.

Love those old SQ's though, and that Coppertone color is really nice too. Should clean up beautifully.I know you'll love having it!

Beautiful machine! Very flexible controls with lots of options. No surprise really on the bleach dispenser troubles, they used a long tube to hold the bleach and probably on this model a tiny pump to push the bleach up to the fill flume where it was carried into the tub with the overflow wash. Bleach is very corrosive and tended to eat away the tube, the pump and the hoses so they leaked after a while - unfortunately, all over the floor!

Great find, you will have a lot of fun with this washer.

Wow Jay, that's a wonderful find congratulations, even better in coppertone! Speed Queens are very dramatic and fun machines, they put on quite a show. I'm sure your set is from the mid or late 60's because of the alumnium agitator, the ones from the 70's had plastic agitators.

Did the fabric softener dispenser not come with it?

That would be a 1969 or 1970 model. My Mother had the matching dryer, which she got in '69.

Be sure to post pics of the washer and dryer together.
