I spotted the solenoid on that speed queen ad in the screen name thread. I've got one sitting around here. Only, I bought mine from Da-Lite screen company. It's used as a door solenoid in their biggest screens. The projection screen at my church is a good 16 feet long, and the same solenoid is used to pull that 16 foot long, 4 inch wide door shut after the screen rolls up!

Yes you can still buy many of the same solenoids that were used in many vintage washers. The appliance manufacturers simply used off the shelf solenoids and the same design is still in use today.
