Much as one detests FB

I never use to use FB until I found out about marketplace. They really did an outstanding job on it. It’s so easy to use, and the incorporation of messenger to communicate with the seller is invaluable. It’s so well done. Probably the best tool out now to sell your unwanted items locally.

I hate FaceBook but find Marketplace awesome.

Here's a couple of  tips for anyone looking to become new users though. FaceBook has restrictions on who they let use it.

A couple years ago they instituted a change where new FB accounts aren't allowed access to Marketplace right away. They expect you to now verify your identity by participating in FB with making posts, liking comments, adding friends, gaining friends and all the other FB nonsense I hate. They had a crackdown on fake accounts a few years ago I guess and now expect new accounts to prove they are real people and not bot generated profiles.

The bad thing however, is that there is no rhyme or reason to it. There are no guidelines as to what exactly you need to do to become "Marketplace Accepted" It could take a couple weeks or a couple months (according to different sites) before you will see the Marketplace feature added to your profile. So don't be discouraged if you sign up just for Marketplace and realize you are locked out of it, give it some time. I only discovered the new rules a few weeks ago.

I will say, in my own experience that having a profile that is authentic looking, with a few posts a reasonable amount of friends and some pictures, is more appealing to some sellers. I had a recent experience with my account where I asked if they could ship the item for sale (A dryer door) as I couldn't pick it up in person, and that I would contact their local scrap dealer(s) to come get the rest of the non working machine to get it out of their way. the seller thought I was trying to scam them because it sounded too weird.. and they said the fact I had no pictures or posts made me seem suspicious as well.

That was a first for me, they quit communicating after that unfortunately, but I took it as good advice and adjusted my account to be more authentic for next time. I made my FB years ago before you had to jump through hoops to get Marketplace verified.

Yes it is highly addictive for me. I’ve stayed away for some time now because I’m out of room. I can usually find something I want every time I log in to marketplace. As someone who has bought and sold for years I can tell you marketplace has it wrapped up in my area these days. Occasionally when I look at Craigslist there are only appliance shop advertisements.

Same here...

Melvin,

Same experience with me on Craigslist. Just posting after posting after posting for the same 5 or 6 dealerships selling modern appliances of all kinds and very few if any independent sellers with older machines.... wading through all the advertisements is frustrating especially when you over-search outside your area with a very wide radius, it's daunting. So I've come to like Marketplace better in that way too, that it has fewer ads, and that you can shut off some of the nonsense listings by clicking a filter or two to tone it down a little more.

eBay is a no go area for us to sell anything

They told us we had not reached their sales target and thus they banned us from being able to sell anything at all so now its FB marketplace for us to shift stuff no longer required, Not sure when eBay made up this ruling but its a bloody nuisance as I understood how it worked !!
