Speed Queen Wringer Lint Filter?

Saw this speed queen on craigslist and wondered what that green thing on the agitator is and what does it do? Oddly enough I had a wringer about 4 years ago that had the same thing but I could never figure out what it was for.

It's a slosh-over filter, I think it's missing the top cover/ring.  There was a perforated ring that went on top of the lower part (shown on agitator) that caught larger bits of lint, strings, etc. and smaller holes in the lower section for finer lint.  They also made this for the automatics, similar design and color.  Largely a gimmick, but they could advertise the feature just like many others of the time.

 

I have one of each breed, but have tried it in the automatic and it did little more than to impede rollover.

I want the thing but...

being 16 and trying to convince my parents that housing that space taker is a good idea is going to take more salesmanship skills than that it took to convince them that I needed another vacuum (Kirby classic III).

I almost forgot,

I figured somehow it was a lint filter a few years ago and ended up wrecking the transmission on my old speed queen wringer when I tried using the drain hose and pump for circulating water by setting the hose into the lint filter. When I left the garage because of a minor crisis, the hose fell off, the water pumped out and the transmission seized from trying to move the wet clothes at the bottom. Sadly, that was the only wringer that I bought that ever worked properly. I bought a SQ to replace it but had no knowledge until afterward that it was the dreaded Saudi copy, did nothing but leak and pop the safety release on the wringer. Also had a Maytag wringer that was so battered when I got it that the wringer rarely engaged on the first try.

"Lint Filter?"

The Speed Queen lint filter was hardly that. Not much more effective than a Maytag lint filter. General Electric and any "burpalator" agitator had the best lint removal. Was always suspicious of those "Magi-Clean" filters that one never could see in a Whirlpool/Kenmore. I figure if you can't see the gobs of lint, where's the proof?!

If your WP or Kenmore drained into a set of laundry tubs, you could see the lint come out. If you had a suds saver model, the filter did not back flush until the suds valve switched from saving wash water to draining through the rinse water drain hose what is spun out as the spin begins. They were very effective.
