Spin seems bound up

I have a whirlpool 1989 model top load washer. the agitate seems to work normally however the when it engages spin it seems to bind up. I have tried to move the drum by hand and it seems completely stuck. the machine is otherwise in immaculate condition.

Has anyone come across this where the spin binds up and is there a way to free it? my understanding is this machine had been disconnected and put into the garage of the former owner of it and left to sit for about 4 years without running.

He claims to have tested it prior to me having it shipped up to me however that may have only been to test the agitate cycle.

when it goes into spin the belt stops and you have to change it back to agitate cycle then help the belt along so the wigwag coils select the agitate cam then it unbinds again.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It turns out that it had got stuck on the break from sitting for so long. I pulled it down removing the agitator and the lid and tub ring to give me clearance then used the tub nut removal tool with a large piece of fencing pipe to break the tub free. i was actually trying to loosen the nut to remove the tub itself for full disassembly however that is no longer necessary as all the other components on this machine work.

once it was freed i was able to engage the spin cycle normally.
