Over the years i have had many hoover and hotpoint washers that do a three step spin sequence... but i have always wondered why do they slow down between stage two and then ramp up again for the top speed??
any ideas??

Apparently it's something to do with the motor changing windings for high speed spinning... think of a car and it's gearbox, where you hear the engine slow down a little before picking up power again when it's changed to a higher gear, it's more or less the same principle.

My Frigidaire FL'er spins at a slow speed for a couple of minutes, then gradually increases speed. Launderess describes it perfectly---sounds like a jet plane gradually ramping up for take-off. However, my machine's top speed is only about 950 rpm. The Miele can spin much faster, I believe.
